Vancouver in a Nutshell?
Ok so this is my first forum on FNK. I'm new to the board, a veteran of online boards n other city scene sites (since the techno underground BBS in ottawa, '95) --- so i'd like to make myself feel at home here :)
If you had to describe Vancouver, the scene(s) and where they're going, what's hot these days and what you think rocks about Vancouver--- what would ya say? :) i'd like to see who's around and how you guys are vibin.. :) indulge me, plz. I haven't been to the city in about 4 years! and even then it was only to visit. i'm excited to see what it has to offer. hehe. jfk Last edited by Jizzy Kizzy; Oct 04, 05 at 11:03 PM. |

(for the pacnw dnb steez) im the token geriatric so i aint turn'n over every nook and cranny these days, but i as for the hiphop and dumb+base these days, this is what im feeln:: dnb--this town, like almost every other town is feeling the bite, that mass accesability, and rising advances in technology bring with it in their wake. Its always been small, but QUALITY in my experience with the pacnw culture over the last decade. Two major weeklies including Fixed Fridays @ the Met, and The almighty Automatic Tuesdays @ the Lotus(holding it down proper for the last 7+years!, as well the righteous ragga monthly RELIK. On the fringe, we also got BRUKOUT @ shine on Wednesdays, bringn the dancehall flavour, GRIME SESSIONS @ shine on Tuesdays bringn the, well, GRIME, as well as the dubstep, and the occasional IDM sounds. Weve had a small but quality history of weekly dnb nights, going back to the nostalgiac nights of PRESHA, AIRTIGHT, the col krushn POUND, as well as the grungy ZWACK, and the short lived, and much missed PROPER. The clubs have included mars/wettbar/atlantis, gracelands/palladium, #7alexander, the sonar, the drink, The legion hall on pender, ms t's cabaret, oH and i forgot the GOOD at Vibe, on Sundays, the most recent to bring the sunday sessions, which i beleive has been on hiatus for the last little while, and since we are on the hiatus tip, there was also ELEMENTS sundays at the Tokyo Lounge. All in all, i think the dnb is gonna take a much deserved and needed break- i dont mean all together, but with the current landscape across the globe, i think its all dependent on what the new+rising stars of the dj+producer world will bring. I notice a new crop of promoters that have been cutting there teeth on some great shows of late, including silverwaters, and from what i saw at the High Contrast show, theres a up and coming crowd thats been diggn on the dnb scene for the last few years, and are as amped, ready to rip the dancefloor, and run chaos on their respective bar tabs, like theres no tommorow. I cant forget to mention the slew of dope radio show including the artofbeatz and the muthafuckn shadow jugglers yo! Such wreckit shops including the ondeck, beatstreet, activepass, zulu, and the tried and true BOOMTOWN I cant forget to mention vancouvers own breaks label on the rise 20HZ, as well as our beloved hometown booking agency/producer crew/gaggle of monkeys the Konspiracy Group. Some of our more established production wizzes including PSIdream and PACIFIC, as well as other hometown heroes(some adopted from strange parts unknown) mechwarrior, bias, angst, kuma, jimungleah, soo, dabbler, wood, soda, illesha, noradawn, eve,the latino connection mang!- c_squared, manos1(although i dont know where the hell he is these days) the don of autotuesdays-jay auto....and so many more(im sorry its late and my fingers are tired) that round up the equivalent to the "band of brothers(and sister)" equivalent to the dnb artists family we as vancouverites are proud to have in charge of settn down a soundtrack to shake some ass, and burn some cash too, ya dig? As for the overall vibe in genenral- its tight, its inviting, leave the bullshit at door, and ripshit on the floor. Welcome yo! for a more in depth, a whos who, and everything else under the son, come over yonder to nwdnb (hosted by the temptous c_squared, LINK, and PSIlocin) as for the HIPHOP, well ill get to that another time, but make no mistake, this town get his fair share of imported talent as well as a rising crop following in the footsteps of some seriously talented lifers yo! For started peep the lamplighter on mon nights for some beats thatll reach over and strangle yeah like hidden hands in the fog...the rest...well how bout another time-- peace+'spect fable |

woah! thanks for the warm welcome and well thought replies!
very informative. I actually played a POUND weekly last time I was in Vancity -- maybe 4 years ago! I'm actually not arriving for a few days but anxious to get settled in. kind of off topic but super relevant to me and from one scene geriatric to another, you may look kindly upon my request. my "current" living situation is going to be very short term. asian girlfriend's crazy aunt's house. i'm already scrambling for another slightly more comfortable, independant "short term" solution (just for myself) .. of course if it works out well for longer, great... do you know of an online source for affordable places and/or not sketchy roommates? or know of a friend, ideally a music maker with an open space in their house of musical wonders? hahaha... :) just *had* to ask. u never know what u find if u fish a little. :) thanks, respekt, peace. kai Last edited by Jizzy Kizzy; Oct 05, 05 at 03:07 AM. |

yah it's a crapshoot i know,
i should just wait til i touch down haha but i'm very .. anxious .. haha to find something, and some of my most memorable roommate experiences actually came from random happerstance ..especially in new cities. my last place here in Halifax hosted an indoor pool recently.. in our living room (a big ghetto front yard dealio heehee) .. and a few memorable 6am taco pool parties .. was reality tv fodder good times. \\ ok back on topic: vancouver! ^^ been to both, i'd have to say my favorite places in halifax would be .. hmm .. the Warehouse when Devin's maxxin out the free drinks haha.. but that's when i've been good and done all his graphic design work .. lol. The Marquee was prolly my fav Halifax venue ever.. now closed. Subrosa afterhours when it's a really hot DJ and it's like all friends of mine in the place that makes for a wicked time. Palace is hot for their wet T and sexy leg shows hahaha, but not really my crowd generally.. i mean , it's a lil mainstream but it can be fun. The Attic hosts some great shows -- going to see KMFDM this Friday with my best friend // my other left hand, before I take off and fly away.
Fable - hehe I find it funny you stuck up for my right to ask you where a good place to find places in Van is in here but you didn't answer me. I suppose I should be happy to have support and have met some friendlies though, i'd be amazed if everything literally JUMPED into place. you know this has been such a quick decision on my part lookin around today at Hali it's weird, I might miss it a little. But I'm excited! w0rd! |
