i think its neccassary. if it lowers the level of violence and possibly saves lives then its a good thing.

I don't have a problem with having armed police on the skytrain. I do have a problem with fake police posing as real police and carrying guns. I think they should just hire more cops, and put some on the skytrain.

Does anybody else remember a few years back when there was this raging debate over whether or not skytrain cops should be able to carry tasers? Gosh, times change.

i support all the new powers they have been givin. they have the right to deal what what ever comes on property now. i think thats great, but i dont think the guns are nessisary at all. i think they are there to scare people. they are not given out because they need them. not in my oppinion anyway. but whats done is done, lets see how that works out.

i think part of the decision was made because of all the people that will be here riding the system when the olimpics are here.
either way they brought on a new lot of security to help out, so that will make things better.

I don't like the fact they are now carrying guns. It will not make me feel safer.

I think there are a number of other safety percautions that could have been utilized before resorting to guns.

I also think this is going to pave the way to armed security guards etc.

I think it's amusing how the Canadian media even went as far as to relate this to the bombings in London. Like guns would prevent terrorism.

Some mentioned that the guns aren't there to be used, but to scare people. I think this will only scare those criminals that don't already have guns to get their own.

I don't feel any safer, therefore to me its all for show.

Bottom line is skytrain officers are afraid of their own protection, so they went and whined and now they get to pack pistols, how lovely.

And to whoever mentioned how nobody even bats an eye at nightclub shootings because their are far too many, if clubs installed a metal detector we wouldnt have nearly as many.

Rubber bullets are a definate option, but still a gun, and guns = more guns. Tasers are dangerous and could result in more deaths.

I agree with Lauren, they went from mediocre to extreme in one leap. We are setting a precedent that we shouldn't have to. Crime is prevalent in those areas, but once again, chances are these are criminals that are probably repeat offenders, and continue to recomitt crimes as a result of not being rehabilitated. It should have started with the law makers making stiffer punishments for petty crimes instead of slaps on the wrist.

i don't know about that. police have guns now, i don't think that criminals will be more likely to buy them just so they can commit crimes at the skytrain station. most people are smart enough to realize the consequences of shooting a police officer (or anyone for that matter), and also smart enough to realize that carrying a gun only increases their own likelihood of being shot. besides, not all criminals are willing to shoot people or have the means necessary to locate or buy a concealable gun.

I find it slightly amusing the fact that in other places (like England) the cops there aren't even allowed to carry guns... all they get is little sticks :). And yet here we are going to even have our security guards walking around with guns... how come England isn't flooded in crime? They seem to be managing without arming all their people with weopons... I dunno, it's just a random thought...

I think the ones at Gateway, Surrey Central and King George should. It's a scary place over there.

they also have cameras EVERYWHERE, and when something goes down a swat team pops up out of nowhere with much bigger guns than our skytrain police do.

lol, ya their swat gets guns (luckily, lol). But I don't understand when people are saying that England IS full of crime... to my knowledge there were MANY more deaths in the states (bad example, I know)... and from watching Bowling For Columbine, the deaths in england were fairly low (I think... been a long time since I saw that). Hmm... I could be wrong, I don't know the exact stats of crime rates over there... but it could be interesting to see the difference of a society that bans guns to even their own protectors to a society that promotes them....

in 2002, england/wales had the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies. i haven't found a more recent statistic, but that gives you an idea anyway.

Take it from someone who used to wait for the 321 for sometimes up to an hour at Surrey Central after midnight-most nights. Then ride it all the way down to Newton. Oh and sometimes I'd get really lucky and it would stop at Newton exchange and I would have to wait half hour to an hour there. Those were good nights. :)

metal detectors in clubs is sort of like an alarm system on a home, if one is so inclined to get themselves in, they'll do it. not saying that they are useless, (since they are putting up more and more metal detectors in clubs now) but i dont think that particular example will keep "tha bad guys" away.

why didnt this poll have a couple more options? the 2 existing seem a bit extreme. i woulda voted for "couldnt care less" since i dont ride the skytrain, but a year ago when i did ride the skytrain everyday i woulda voted "i couldnt fuckin care less". i also get the impression that some of you dont like cops, perhaps swaying your opinion on this whole matter. i say: if youre not doin anythin wrong, or if you are but youre not being a showoff, then you have nothing to worry about. not all cops are assholes.. only some, but it is true that YOU have the potential to make ANY cop an asshole if you give him/her attitude..

be cool, stay in school
