stand ups are always the best, sometimes a bit more $$$ but you will get a nice even tan.
when you first start out start anywhere from 7-9 minutes depending on your skin color and how well you tan and gradually work your way up. for a nice color go like 2-3 times a week for the first 2 weeks. i usually dont like going 2 days in a row, but it all depends on how dark you want it and how fast you need it. as for lotion, there are several different types each one works differently depending on the person so try a few and find one that you seem happy with. each lotion has a certain amount of bronzer in it to help you tan better. i personally use a double bronzer because i find it works best for my skin. also caffeine is very good for the skin or so i've been told. im still a harsh rookie, but thats just my 2 cents. anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong, thanks. HAPPY FAKE AND BAKING! :) |

Mystic tanning is always nice too. It's a good coat before hitting the real rays as your skin type is prone to burning. Over time, the mystic will fade and your daily tanning will overlap it. I would try "light" (with or without bronzer). It lasts about 7-10 days at about $35 bux. I go to the Sunscape downtown.
You can also try self tanner at home. Funny, I just put on a coat of ROC. London Drugs is actually have a sale - two for $26. It's a bit more upscale in tanners, so it's doesn't go orange-like. Vichy, Shisheido, NeoStrata are also all good. I would have suggested stand up too, but if you're fair skinned, you don't wanna touch down in Mexico looking like a lobster already. I would have also suggested 5 minutes max to start. |

I dont know if stand ups realy make that much of a diffrence? Personaly lie downs do the trick for me and are much more relaxing. It also depends on what salon you goto, what kind of beds they use... will better determin your time. So far Fabutan seems good enough for me.
I base tan all the time before hot weather Vacations. Through out the year I go for 10-12 min one ever week or two. If im pale I start a month or two before. Start anywhere from 6-8 min and move up to 10-12 min. If you start to go for 15-20 min you will start to get the leathery look. If you get any redness then you went in for too long. Personaly I would go in 1-2 times a week if you want a healthy base. If you want to go all leathery then go in 2-3 times a week. Overall I probly sugest going in for shorter sessions and more often during the week. As for lotions. They do help, but can be so expencive. Either I use a salon lotion just on my face and areas I expose more. And if I want to protect parts that burn easly like my nose... ill just use regular 15spf lotion. Also clean/exfoliated skin will tan much easyer. And realy... the ppl at the salon will help you best. If anything I find they put you in for less time then you could probly handle just to be on the safe side. Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jun 08, 06 at 01:04 AM. |

for some it really is a preventative measure. Like me, when ever i go down to the tropics i need a base tan. If i dont then i just burn up real bad and its just painful. that dose alot more harm to my skin. |

Krista... u are lucky to live in Langley.
Go to Island Tan out there by Superstore they have really good beds and when i used to go there they had toonie tuesday which meant u pay 2 bucks and could go in to a stand up. So by doing that u would even out ur tan from a lay down bed. It's what i did before and it was awesome. I think i used to go in the super bed (strongest bed they have). As for lotions, get one with a bronzer in it like Andrew said. It helps tint ur skin a bit. |

Stand up tanning isn't a great idea, either, because it has little or no UVB rays which penetrate your skin deeper and are found in natural sunlight. The best type of bed you can use, Krista, is a regular bed with bulbs that are 4% UBV, 96% UVA. These beds will give you an even tan as long as you move around a bit (shift to your side and put your arms above your head). They are also the most gradual tan - you can tan up to 25 mins in these beds...I would recommend starting around 7 mins for you and moving it up by 2 mins every three tans. Once I have a fairly dark base, I move on the king beds which have a max of 20 minutes and a triple face tanner, and the super beds which have a max of 12 minutes, a triple face tanner, and shoulder tanners. I rotate sessions between these two beds because the super bed gives a deeper tan that will last longer, and the king bed is more of a surface tan. Tanning in a combination of different types of beds is a great idea because generally their bulbs will be different and therefore you'll avoid getting an unnatural colour. |

I don't mind beds... just don't like the lines that you get from it. |

^ No way. Mystic tan doesn't protect your skin whatsoever as it has no UVA/UVB inhibitors. Your skin will still burn the same way it would if you didn't have a mystic tan, you just won't SEE the redness.
Edit: What lines from beds? Tanning nude = no lines Last edited by galaxie; Jun 08, 06 at 06:04 PM. |

I tan for my psoriasis. A couple days in the booth and it's completely gone, but I keep it up just so it doesn't pop up every now and then. I'm finding stand-up booths are much better than the beds.
as for lotions, I have no idea. I just told the lady "I like anything hemp" and she just gave me a free bottle that I rarely use. |

Tanning beds is NUDE always! Sometimes, you can get vertical lines on your back or front from the positioning of bulbs. |
