1) Where is a good place that won't totally butcher my ACTUAL nails and is "reasonably" priced?
sassy nail on w4th, i used to see phillip. i forget what the actual price was to get the suckers put on, maybe $80 but the fills were about $50 every two weeks. 2) Gels or acrylics, pros and cons. i always got gels and i have nothing bad to say about them 3) Any tidbits of info or personal experiences that can be contributed. i loved it when people would comment on how nice my nails looked! also, if you go too a lot of clubs with black light watch out, some fake nails glow and it really does not look hot! |

1) Where is a good place that won't totally butcher my ACTUAL nails and is "reasonably" priced?
I go to Nail's by Charmaine, for a full set it's $32 and a fill's $22. She's on the borde of Port Moody/Coquitlam. 2) Gels or acrylics, pros and cons. I've always had acrylic nails and I've never had a problem with them. 3) Any tidbits of info or personal experiences that can be contributed. Watch some nails if you tan... tanning beds can turn some nails yellow. I haven't had it happen but I've had it happen to friends of mine. |

omg don't waste your money. just keep your real nails in good shape, don't chew 'em and get yourself a wicked manicure!!
20 bucks a week, and it's such a treat!! Plus you don't thrash your real nails, because holy crap, it hurts when the fake ones start to break (AND SCRATCH YOUR VINYL :( ) |

I have no recommendations on where to go, bc I went to a woman who did them out of her home. She was amazing, but has a really limited clientele now, so I'm afraid I on't think I can refer you. However, I have always preferred sculpted gel nails. Acrylic have always left my nails damaged, and have turned yellow from tanning :/ Afterhaving nails for 4+ yrs, I stopped getting them a few mths ago, and my nails are lovely! I just invested in some good product and take care of them. OFTEN.

^^ seconded. Hand cream and a nail file. Keep em square and get a manicure every 10 days or so - and you're waaaaay better off than paying an arm and a leg for fakes... NOT TO MENTION ....... you have to get fake nails "filled" every 3 weeks or they look sooo gross. That costs you at least 40 bucks just to fill them. A little polish and some TLC is just as good :)

I've been wearing acrylics for almost a year now. I LOVE them. My real nails just never look nice no matter how well I take care of them.
Fakies look clean and crisp and make everything you wear look better too. I love them for work, because my last two jobs I have had to do a lot of pointing at things, lol. Acrylics are harder, which means they don't break as easily. One thing I noticed is that people with new fake nails that aren't used to them tend to break them more often. Start with a short set and as they grow out you can figure out how much length you can handle. I get mine done at Professionail...It's a chain, they're not bad and they're in a convenient location for me...I wouldn't go so far as to recommend them though. I would recommend Sarah at Body & Soul in New West. She's really well known and has a reputation for being one of the best in BC. I heard a rumour she's at a different shop now though. Maybe ask Kat, I think she does Kat's nails. As far as damage....I had my whole set taken off and redone a couple months ago, and besides a couple shreds of the top layer coming off my natural nails I had no significant damage or discomfort at all. I've never had any of the problems you often hear about. My roommate on the other hand, is still dealing with cracked/split/brittle nails from having acrylics that were removed two months ago. I've formed a theory on this: my hair is super healthy/strong and blowdrying/straightening doesn't damage it much...hers is really affected by that stuff and she puts a lot of work into hot oil treatments etc. Since hair and nails are made of the same stuff...you can gauge how much fake nails might damage your natural nails by how much dye & heat affect your hair. |

Christy, where do you get your nails primped? I'm thinking of treating myself soon. =) |

I take really great care of my nails and I have people ask me if they're fake all the time but i've never had fake nails in my life. Honestly the damage in the long run isn't worth it. |

Neeevvvv - I get my nails primped anywhere and everywhere. I recommend those "sweatshop" nail places on Robson street. I go to "Spirit Nails". They charge me 45 bucks for a manicure/pedicure. They do a terrrific job, and they have the exact shade of black that i love ;)
My manicures usually last about 10 days or so with no chipping/breaking. They'll do the mani/pedi at the same time too, so it saves time ;) |

Lisa, pretty much what Nev and Chrissy has said rings true.
I give myself a manicure every few weeks. I have all the tools at home. My nails stay nice as long as I am not working with my patient in the mornings. That is where I tend to break them if they are going to break. When they are weak, I use "Healthy Hoof"(can be found at Merle Norman in Guildford) or "Nail Envy" by OPI. Don't waste your money. |

See, the reason that I'm thinking of fakes is because I've been a nail biter all of my life. My nailbeds are destroyed and my nails look like shit no matter what I do (filing, buffing, etc). A couple even have edges that border-line curl up. No manicure is going to make them look nice (except maybe my cuticles would look better and less hangnails).:sad2:
If I had fakes I'd at least get out of the habit and stop stop biting. |

^ I have the same problem.. although I've been getting better at the not biting them (except for when I am stressed, or really drunk. lol).
I'm getting my nails done relatively soon. If you were in Vic I'd say check out Nails N More, a girl friend of mine swears by them. :) |

OMG do you girls really spend that much on nails? Your not rock stars or super models!?!
Ive had a few manicures done before from gc's, but they have never lasted more than a week or so. Pedicures for spring and summer are an other story and last much longer for me. Anyways like Avana said I take good care of my nails and really sit down and do them every week or 2 weeks. I dont keep them too long (2mm past my skin) as it increases your chances of getting sick the longer they are. Regularly trimming them also decreases the chances of them breaking. Believe it or not... the best thing for your nails is a good diet! I cant remember at this moment what it was, but there are a few foods that really help keep your nails strong and healthy. |
