I'd say more then half the people here don't have degrees. They look for previous work experience. It's generally accepted in radio that your degree gets you your first job, then after that nobody gives a rats ass about what school you go to.

There legally has to be a severance package. Minimum of 2 weeks for every year of service for an average person. Managers and executives will get more.

Whether or not you get fired or laid off, you are eligible for severance.

I think I learned this in my first couple of classes of Engineering Law.

Liability resulting from length of service
63 (1) After 3 consecutive months of employment, the employer becomes liable to pay an employee an amount equal to one week's wages as compensation for length of service.

(a) totalling all the employee's weekly wages, at the regular wage, during the last 8 weeks in which the employee worked normal or average hours of work,

(b) dividing the total by 8, and

(c) multiplying the result by the number of weeks' wages the employer is liable to pay.

(5) For the purpose of determining the termination date under this section, the employment of an employee who is laid off for more than a temporary layoff is deemed to have been terminated at the beginning of the layoff.

as someone who's been hiring on and off for my department (and various others in the past), I'd like to say that degrees generally mean shit in the workplace. They might warrant a closer look at a resume, but they are absolutely not a looked at with more weight than relevant work experience. Especially when the degree is an undergrad...

i've seen both sides, as a person who's involved in hiring and someone who's education section of their resume is highlighted by highschool AP english and math.

It seems to be a common problem in schools. A lot of students come out thinking they know everything, but the way it's done in most industries is way different.

At least that was my experience. My program was taught by ex-industry people, but it was taught the way they knew, which wasn't the way it was done anymore.

I would definitely offer someone with no formal education and 2 years of industry experience more money than a fresh-out-of uni kid who happens to major in a related to my industry.

For most fields - interviews and perceived team fit are probably more important than exp. or education.

The resume gets you the interview but you still have to nail the interview.

I dropped out in grade 9 and I still have no issues finding jobs that pay better than most of my friends'. My only education aside from scattered highschool classes is field tickets that take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks to obtain.

I got fed up with dealing with my highschool administration.... so i was trying to be good... sat down for my first class in grade 11, and my principle walks in and takes me out and gives me a massive lecture about how i shouldn't fuck around etc etc... and this is the first day back at school and first class... i told her to go fuck herself and left... haven't looked back and now i'm doing better then most of the people from my highschool
