Czech is another example of a guy that lives off DJ'ing/residencies but again, he has been playing for 10+ years himself! |

Put it this way people. We have awesome locals with amazing talent. I think we should enjoy what we have and not worry what their getting paid. Even though this is a good question whether if they can or cannot survive just by djing is most likely a no. Many have stated that unless your producing or making it big like Vinyl Richie and Czech. They've done what they've done for 10 + years. A lot if not all of the resident dj's that we have now do have jobs or are doing something on the side.

lots of big-name DJs make a comfortable living at it, but they do work hard, usually in more than one sector of the industry. Very few of them are getting crazy rich off of it though, and longevity is also a rare thing in this industry. You could probably count on your fingers the amount of DJs who've attained real wealth through their music, and actually hung on to it for more than a couple of years.
as for locals... i know a few guys here who pay the rent/bills with DJ gigs & related work.... but it's a struggle, especially over the past year when a lot of club gigs have dried up. 2, 3 years back, it wasn't uncommon for even small-name locals to pull down a grand or two a month, but that would be over 2-3 gigs a week. now that everyone has 10 friends who DJ, nobody thinks they need to pay for talent anymore - just book your buddy who's been playing for 6 months. that, imo, has done a lot of damage throughout the club & party scene... as DJs who demand pay for legitimate talent have been passed over for non-charging newbies, the quality of music programming at events has decreased.... resulting in a lack of interest from club & party goers. not to say that there aren't talented newbies, but i have noticed experienced DJs in every corner of the scene being neglected. The prospect of not having to pay most DJs on a line-up has obvious appeal to promoters, but what's happening in the bigger picture is that the scene is being suffocated, choked by a glut of amateur DJs who lack the ability to proprly move a crowd. sure they can keep em dancing, but the element of surprise is not there. and that is what keeps them coming back. |

Well said Wood...
I have mad respect for dudes like you, Soda and a ton of others that have more then paid your dues locally... Which reminds me, I will be booking you soon! With what appears the Plaza of Nations will be leaving as a venue, it makes it a bit more difficult but stay tuned on that. Peace. |
