The 'nice' way to tell someone to put in their share at work

well?

do you stop asking nicely and just tell them what to do?

i dont think there is a nice way.
if its getting to the point where you want to jab them in the eye with a pen, you have to just do it.

either that or see the manager, and express what needs to happen.

Ah...This is one of my biggest challenges as a Manager.

I work with alot of women that are a)Friends b)Older then me. Sometimes I find it difficult to express my concern about things not getting done - which means that orders are not getting out. Often I end up working over time to finish these things myself.

I think that if it is an energy drain on your part - then you need to speak up. Either yourself or mention it to a manager. Alot of people don't really know that they arn't pulling their weight until it's pointed out and usually (though not always) they step it up.

Good Luck =D

I am dealing with this right now as well being back into a more supervisory position, and also because i have been busy as fuck lately and not wanting to have to pick up everyone else's slack when i don't even want to pick up my own.
I just go one step up right away, and let them deal. I have tried being nice, joking my way around it, and even casually mentioning th lack of effort and nothing seems to be done. Now i taddle, and i taddle with pride because it is known that i am a hard worker.
It is always good to have something in writing too, to back your ass up. Goodluck Myra.

definitely disruptive to my job performance, otherwise I'd let them just ruin it for themselves y'know? I'm awesome at letting go of things that are 'NMFP' (not my fucking problem. I love that acronym!)

the thing is, my manager knows how I feel...we're a department full of pretty capable, hardworking people and we're pretty self-managed, going to my manager would only have them turning it back to me and asking me what I think I should do :P the thing is, the way I thought I should handle it isn't cutting the cake.

I lost my cool at this person yesterday which isn't a good thing to do either..haha

I think depending on superiority; if you were said persons supervisor, asking nicely would come first, followed by direct instruction. If its someone you are on par with and its taking away from your productivity, I would just go to your boss and let them deal with it.

When I managed a route of independent U-Haul locations in the lower mainland and some wouldn't do their share, and generally try to jerk me around because of my age...., Id just show up with a van full of lot guys and my key cutter and take all their trucks to the locations that deserved them. I guess its a little affirmative, but it worked!

Yeah. I got the memo. And I understand the policy. And the problem is just that I forgot the one time. And I've already taken care of it so it's not even really a problem anymore.

As a co-worker, if you feel comfortable, speaking with the other person directly and explaining to them in a non-confrontational manner and expressing your feelings over the situation.

If not, seek a manager's help.

As a manager, call meeting with employee and remind them of the job duties and clarify their "teamwork" participation. Warning maybe need to be given depending on the severity.
