My cat...
I'm outta things to do... my cat just doesnt seem to wanna use her litter box to do her business. Unless it's a number 2.
I've done it all... And no matter how effing clean it is... or what kind of litter.... or where i put it.... or etc.... she wont fucking use it. HELP! It's almost to the point i think She does it on purpose cuz she hates me and my roomie. :( -J |

my dog still pees on the floor on a fairly regular basis :(
there's no way around it, she has two "accident" mats in the house (puppy training pads) that she can go on, and we take her outside ALL THE TIME but she still pees in the house, especially if she doesn't get her way...we're all too soft to get mad at her though, she's so damn cute! |

jovi, my mom is having the same problem you are. although, her cat uses the toilet from time to time. she has him on kitty tranqs. a few of the suggestions that i can think of....
- if your cat is sharing a litter box with another cat, get it it's own box. they dont share well. - get a new litter box. the old one might stink. - try a new cat food. apparently changing the diet up sometimes helps. - if all else fails, take him to the vet, this could be indicative of a bladder infection in the kitty. |

how do you train a cat though?...would it not be similar to a dog? |

Actually, no... Cats can't really take the "lay down the law" type of training. The best you can do is get them to go through the motions over and over until it's routine for them.
(time for psychology 101 terminology!) You have to use classical conditioning as opposed to operant conditioning for cats. punishments don't work, it just makes them give you attitude. F'rinstance.... Want to train your cat to leave the house on demand, take them outside, then clap your hands once you've put them down and go back inside. Eventually they'll figure out that clap = outside, so if you clap your hands, they'll run outside. edit: So for my method it's not so much the telling them "no" that convinces them to stop urinating, it's more the placing them in the litter box right after. Eventually they'll figure out that urine = litter box and get the idea. The saying "no" just means that it'll help them figure out that you're displeased with it, and so if you use it any time that they're doing something wrong they'll also figure out that "no" means "don't do it that way" I most recently had a problem with my roommate's cat crapping all over the place and this was how I got him to stop. My roommates had no clue what to do but after doing that with him a couple of times he stopped. Last edited by ebbomega; Apr 08, 08 at 07:47 AM. |

I only have one cat - get a new litter box. the old one might stink. the one i have is fairly new... - try a new cat food. apparently changing the diet up sometimes helps. I have... I've tried 3 dif types... same out come - if all else fails, take him to the vet, this could be indicative of a bladder infection in the kitty. I jsut got my cat fixedand they said She's apparently very healthy. -So for my method it's not so much the telling them "no" that convinces them to stop urinating, it's more the placing them in the litter box right after. Eventually they'll figure out that urine = litter box and get the idea. The saying "no" just means that it'll help them figure out that you're displeased with it, and so if you use it any time that they're doing something wrong they'll also figure out that "no" means "don't do it that way" that was what i first did when she started! i still do it... -lay down the law done that too.. didnt go to well :/ I use to out her in the litter box after I'd find the incident then bath her.. that workd for a bit.. but not anymore. I think my cat hates me. |

while i am sure your cat was healthy at the time Jovi. try the vet, if you google it, the first three sites that came up all cited urinary tract or bladder infections are the main cause.

I agree with Avana... take her to the Vet. Or try moving her box to where she is peeing in your place.
One of my friends cats used to always pee her bathroom on the bathmat. Once she got rid of it the cat started to use the box again. |

my old boss put it best.
cat's are two steps down from a fly. personally i hate cats, i think the best way to train them is with a foot to the ass on the roof of a highrise. or with a shot gun. but, i do know animals a bit, and i do know that they won't do this sort of thing out of spite or mailce. they don't have the mental capacity to think "haha i'll teach her to put me on a diet, i'll pee on the rug!" i also know that freaquent or sudden urination is indicative of kidney or liver problems. your best bet is to take her to the vet and ask for a full blood screen. also make note of the color and smell of the urine. anything orangeish or smelling strongly of ammonia is no bueno. monitor how much any of your animals are drinking, increased water intake is always a sign of some change in their body (unless something like climate change would cause dehydration) also, not enough water is really a dangerous thing. the most common two reasons for an animal to drink more is fever and kidney problems. plus, it wouldn't hurt to run blood on your animals every year or less. i like to run blood on my horses every 6 months or less. |

peeing where their owner sleeps is usualy a sign on seperation anxiety, peeing where the animal sleeps is a sign that you should have taken it to the vet months ago. |

Since she is litterbox trained (at least she was when she lived with me) I think it's a medical issue. I say take her to the vet and tell them exactly what she is doing and how often. Rambo (my cat growing up) started peeing in our bathtub when he had crystals in his urine. He would have died if my mom didn't take him to the vet AS SOON as he started using the bath tub instead of his box. He was in the hospital for 3 days and it cost my mom almost $1k but it was worth it cause he lived another 7 years with us. :)
