yuppers, its so true. its caused by over produced melatonin levels in the brain. melatonin increases when exposed to long periods in darkness.
it happens in most of us actually though walks on a clear day and outdoor sports help out, but there are also cases where a person may actually need to have access to a light box for the absorbtion of melatonin ("phototherapy".) you could also talk to your doctor about anti-depressants as well. |

You're not funny, you're not witty, you're ignorant and if you want to reply to this particular comment I'd prefer it if you showed up at Ghetto Blaster and did so to my face, because then we'll see who the witty one is. Anyways, in reply to the seasonal depression, I'd recommend a tanning bed, I know it's not the healthiest but it honestly does help and it makes you feel a hell of a lot better. I think if you tan in moderation it won't be too harsh on your skin. Going once or twice a week makes a world of difference. |

Get a light box, and put it in your kitchen or common room while you're getting ready in the morning to do whatever it is you do.. Apparently they help. I'm looking into getting one soon because winter makes me feel pretty rough.
SAD is caused by the long winter nights, and short days.. Light stimulates your brain causing 'happiness chemicals' to be released. Hence when there are few hours of daylight (even if it's SUPER sunny out) some people tend to get really down especially in the darker hours. Happens to me... Good luck, though.. ask your doctor about the lightboxes. |

yeah, I'll second all the info about tanning beds and solar lamps. i guess i used to have SADs but that's just what my psychologist said and she could be full of shit. they like to overprescribe.
what i would reccomend is talking to someone. there are lots of places to go and get free help for depression-related issues: it's a lot easier if you're in high school, however, or any educational facility. -soph. |

in phase-delayed sleep, people have trouble falling asleep at a certain time, because their temperature is too high. since light has a direct effect in the production of melatonin (a hormone that is sensitive to light and helps you sleep), that could be a reason why the bright lights can help alter the circadian rhythms. john: I don't know yet. I don't have tickets and I don't know if they're sold out yet. :( --Joanne :P |
