Yeah i agree. If ur young u can easily work labour jobs cuz ur healthy and such. As wigglesworth said, wait till hes old, he'll be a wreck. I say school is only one step u need to take to get to ur own career. I wish i had the mentality i have now, back in highschool. So many things i would of done differently.

i found highschool a breeze, the acedemic part of it was boring to me, and i prove that in grade 12 by just not fucking caring for anything but art.... i regret it in the sense that from not caring about english i got i think 76 % int he course and 92 % on my provincail... btu this means that now i have to pay $40 to take english cause i have to take a fucking exam for college. but no matter how stupid i felt the whle process was, i stayed there. i got kicked out of capp alot for standing up to the teacher and telling him it was bulshit to decide my life at 17, and he told me that i would be unsuccessful in life if i became an art student.
i had a close friend who dropped out for the opposite reason, she just couldnt handle the structure of school, so she dropped out and went into correspondance and ended up getin her diploma. it took her a year longer, but she did it her way.
personally, i think its fucking stupid to drop UNLESS you find a way of gettin your diploma\ged. where are you going to end up in life? you will always be on the bottom rung of society unless if some miracle happens and you win the lottery or something.
its only highschool, you think its the end of the world, and that you are sooooo old and you know sooooooo much, but wait a year or two or ten afterwards and see how you feel about it. just fucking have fun at school. enjoy the friendships and all the drama that goes on. and its really not that much work.

I'm a highschool drop-out, but definitely not the average one.

Most people drop out because they hate school, find it's too much work, or they're just lazy, etc. I dropped out because I was bored to TEARS with all of my classes, I was getting straight As and only going to MAYBE two full days of classes per week. I figured, why the hell am I wasting my time doing this for when I could be working full-time?

So for the last two and a bit years I've been working full-time, and I've found that I feel much more fulfilled than I did when I was in highschool.

However, I am on the waiting list at VCC to write my GED so that I can go straight into College, rather than waste my time completing useless highschool classes. (Useless for me = could be very useful for others.)

I guess I'm definitely the opposite of what most people see a highschool dropout as.......then again, when I dropped out, I never had any intentions not to go back to school, I just didn't want to be going to school at the time.
wow your so great!! i wish i could be like you!

personally if you drop out of highschool your a chump who lacks self discipline and i wouldnt even hire you to to be a carpenters healper for $16hr. thought you can make alot of money wokring construction, but those jobs will wear you out and they are physically hard and relatively unsafe. Also employment in the construction industry is highly cyclical, right now were in a boom time of construction and my company is finding it hard because trade prices are going up, therefore people are being paid more, but you have to realize that this boom will not last and most construction companies are really quick to lay people off.

^Sean knows what he's talking about man... him and I have had some pretty good discussions about this. He's definitely right on the lack of self discipline. I mean not everything in life is exciting but a lot of it may be a necessity and graduating from high school is one of them.

My Dad works construction and he was smart and entrepreneurial enough to start his own business. There are so many ups and downs in construction that in another 6 months you could find yourself jobless and on welfare... it really can be that bad. I got straight A's too... graduated with a 4.0. I rarely had to attend class and when I did I was bored.... but I stuck through it until the end. Either way thats not something you should brag about.. it makes you look pretentious.

Ok hands down no questions asked.....You need your highschool diploma. I hire and fire people all the time and let me tell you if you can't commit to school and finish off what you started how do I as an employer now that tasks that I'll give you will get done or if you start something are you going to complete it or quit half way through. School is a breeze compared to many other obsticles in life. I'd go back to my highschool days any time and let me tell ya I'd be the nerdiest of nerds if I had the chance to do it again. I know at times it seems long but in the grand scheme of things 5 years of your life is nothing and it can open so many doors for you if you want it to. Hey if you want to be a carpenter then that's great but what if you want to start your own construction buisness and want to take a buissness course to get yourself a jump start? Where's your diploma please? If only one thing people listen to from me please make it this one I can not stress how important your graduation is. It may not seem it now but in the long run it's so important. Yeah I know I sound like a parent but I guess it's cause I have seen a few close friends of mine go the wrong route and it not only cost them alot more time in the long run but also money to get back on track. Just my thoughts.

i still don;t see why people drop out. justify it all you want, but it will never make sense to me.

if you are bored and not feeling academically challenged, why not just do all your academic courses at once and graduate a year early?

if you are bored of school cuz you hate it, just take the easy courses and slack off. getting a 50% in every course doesn;t actually take that much effort.

i don't see why, in this day and age, people drop out. it's 2004!!! jeebus!!

i hated high school too. all the social bullshit to deal with and stupid teachers and power struggles.....

but who gives a shit? just finish it and move on with your life.

i graduated, but i'm taking some night school high school courses right now to freshen up on ma math and physics and it sucks

a lot of the people in my math 11 class are drop outs trying to catch up and graduate....they're like the surrey kids of richmond always yapping, sprinting outside during the break for a smoke

many kids that drop out are foreign...mostly cause their parents live back home, leaving faith in their kid to go to school and all that but they just end up skipping all the time

this has nothing to do with this topic, i just wanted to rant

it can work out for some people, but let's face facts 99% of people who didn't grad high-school aren't exactly loaded with options.

His arguement had logic and reason behind it, where as your response was purely superficial. Guess YOU'RE just living up to you grammer police title.

How so?
My original post was intended only as a different point of view because I'm not the typical "drop-out".
He was essentially saying that I was wrong simply because I didn't want to go about my life the normal way. I don't see what's so wrong about that. I never advocated dropping out of school; in fact, I agree that in most cases it's a really, really stupid idea. However, my point was that one can't necessarily stereotype and say that people who don't graduate the traditional way will never graduate, and will therefore never make anything of themselves.

And no, I'm not just living up to my grammar police title, I'm utilising what I learned in school. You can't argue that it's kind of ironic that those people advocating finishing highschool can't even make proper use of what they learned, or rather, should have learned.

remember when you were a kid saying "when i grow up i want to be a (instert career here)? well, i think that drop-outs should say that to themselves, 'cause whats a life if your not doing something that you love? i doubt that working labour jobs and working at mcdonalds was what you wanted to be when you were young. finish high-school, you'll have so many more options. or, you could be lazy in highschool, but still graduate (like me) and then take night-school classes to catch up on the shit you didn't take in highschool (again like me), so that you can work towards a higher goal. dropping out is stupid, and if your still a teenager, get your ass back in school.

I actually know many people who were sick of school but either drudged on or found other ways of graduating. they may have taken correspondence, or decided to do home-teaching. if they found classes too easy, they would take other courses that interested them or enriched classes to challenge them. but they didn't drop out.

natalie: it's not that I think you'll never make anything of yourself, in fact I think it's great that you still plan on getting your highschool equivalency.. however sean's post was saying that he finds highschool dropouts lack self-motivation. now if you could please explain: would feeling that school is crap and deciding to drop out something a self-motivating person would do?

^At the time, I was motivated to do OTHER things, such as work full-time. Just because someone's not motivated to do one thing, doesn't mean they're a bum and aren't motivated to to ANYTHING. My goals and priorities were different than my peers at the time. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to go about one's life following a path other than the one most travelled.
