if i have pretty good, enjoyable sex isn't that a 5/6? our society seems to think that 7/8 is 'pretty good' which makes the whole scale logarithmic. if i had to guess where it came from, it would be magazine reviews.

if you see an album get a 5 in rolling stone you know it sucks cock, but rarely an album gets <4. we may just as well make all reviews out of 5 by subtracting 5 from every score we see.

just another weird way our brains work. 5 should be a nice 'average' and 6 should be 'above average'. if you tell a girl 'man that was a 6!' you'd probably get punched out. but you're really telling her that compared to all the other sex, that was better than usual.
