while people were still in a 'primitive' state in a hunter/gather society mates were chosen by physicality more then anything - a male looked for a robust female who had wide hips that looked like she could survive childbirth..this was important because if she died that child likely would as well and that would threaten the males chances of carrying on their lineage. Males and feamles were drawn by scent, and pair bonding wasn't a factor yet -- males would hump all sorts of females in order to make the most babies
What is attractive is subjective and often evolving, what someone would find attractive right now was unatttractive in the 19th century. early man, and most mammals now, made partner choices not based on looks -- Its todays society that puts emphasis on looks and beauty.
