Silver Donn....
so one of my horses from work, Silver Donn raced on saturday. during the race we saw his head pop up and then he just stopped trying. we thought he bled or something and the jockey thought he didn't like being squeezed on the rail and was intimidated.
the next day we came to the barn and i went to check him out to see if any minor aches or injuries had come up over night. then i noticed his eye. it had a piece the size of 2 peas missing! we think he was hit in the eye with a large rock or shoe during the race, that's when his head popped up. his eye is going cloudy now and i think he will lose all his sight in that eye. it makes me so sad. this is an amazing horse, he was nominated for horse of the year when he was 3 (he's 6 now) and he's made almost $250,000 for his owner/breeder Jim Morgan. he was Jims only horse for 2 years and he just wouldn't lose. he's such a classy old horse, i love working with him. now because of his eye he can't train for fear dirt may get in his eye while he's on the track and cause an even bigger problem. he seems to be in ok spirits but if he can't train for a long time he may become depressed, he loves his job. i feel so terrible for him, we're doing everything we can. the vet comes to treat his eye with BNP several times a day and we keep a bubble blinker cup over his eye to keep the light out, we also keep the lights off in his stall. i hope he'll be ok. |

thats horrible
i know how you feel.. my family and i have had a lot of horse injuries to deal with and it's not a good feeling to see your babies hurt.. my neighbours got llamas one year and they let them out in the field next to my sister's TB, Primo (Prime Time) and he freeaked out and jumped the fence and ran down to the barn and over the shavings pile which has a cement wall about 2-3 feet high on one side with large metal spikes sticking out to tie the tarp down to.. and he got his hooves caught up in the tarp and fell on the spike and he got a hole, right behind the front leg, right where the girth sits, big enough that you could fit your fist up into.. it was so scary.. but he eventually healed from that another time we just got a new horse, Freedom, she was almost 3 and really nervous.. after leading her around and letting her get to know the place we let her out into the riding ring..and our gate was the old metal kind that had two pieces in the middle come up to a point so it looked like ther was an upside down V in the middle..well anyways.. when we left her she started freaking out and tried to jump the gate and didn't quite make it, so the point of the gate stabbed into her chest, and apparently if it had gone any farther it would have cut through a major artery and through her trachea.. needless to say we got a new gate immediately. and another time we had bred my mom's TB horse (porche) to Pacific Sunset and she had a foal (ps. mackenzie..or Mac).. then 5-6 months later we went to breed her again.. and we asked the breeders not to put porche and mac in padocks with other horses because she's very very protective.. so they went ahead and put her in with other horses.. so one day there was a horse leaning over the fence near mac and porche got protective and tried to kick the other horse through the fence with had barb wire on it as well.. that wrapped around her back legs and no one did anything about it until she was brought in that evening.. (apparently someone saw her kick and didn't do anything about it..) they took off/out the wire finally but they didn't call a vet or treat it or anything.. so my mom and i went there the next day to find her with badly swollen legs with mad proud flesh. so we took her home immediately..called the vet we were told to give her penisilin shots.. my dad gave her a penisilin shot, but accidently gave her the shot in a major artery.. it went straight to her brain and she died within 5 mins.. poor mac was left without a mom at 6 months old i can't imagine how my dad must have felt. now i'm sad.. =oP i'm sure he'll be ok.. he might not be able to see very well out of one eye, but horses are proud and stubborn animals..and if he loves what he does.. then he should keep doing it when he's better good luck! |

Come on, people! It's time she learned...
There's no tooth fairy; there's no santa claus; there's no God; and Silver Donn's taking a trip to the glue factory. There I said it. It's an ugly job, but someone's gotta do it. Update: I saw Silver Donn jut recently, and he's doin' alright; I'm still out of glue; I haven't had a seizure since I ran out of glue. |

QUOTE] wow, you could sue that vet. legaly you're not allowed to give owners IV or IM drugs. i guess it's a sad but good example of why people who are unsure shouldn't give shots. lucky for me i've been shown how to do IV and IM shots.... (you have to give them alot when you manage barns) |
