this has happened to me tons of times before, and the great news is that a lot of the reason that people treat you like that is because they percieve you as a threat in some aspect. This means that yes, you are good at your job, and yes you are intelligent, and better looking and it scares the shit out of them. Sad situation for them to be in, really. |

The great thing about my previous position was that there were no "old" people on the same level feeling threatened by younger, brighter, more ambitious managers. Sometimes, when you wanna be like "YOU DON'T KNOW MORE THAN ME YOU FUCKING DOUCHEBAG" you just have to suck it up and do your best to make yourself look good - even when you wanna reach through the phone and stab your boss in the jugular. |

they may not know more than you, or be younger, or brighter and whatnot.
but they were in your spot at one point, and they did this thing called paying your dues. and that is what you have to do, it's a right of passage (or so has been my experience) that you must pay your dues before you'll recieve much respect in your chosen career by your peers. just my 2 cents. |

The way I see it, if we have the same job title, the playing field should be even. I don't care how long you've been there, if I'm better, you'd better acknowledge it, and vice-versa. Edit: You don't get to the top of the corporate ladder by "waiting your turn". It takes hard work, dedication, and a hell of a lot of drive and self-motivation. Someone who has been in their position for "years" clearly doesn't have what it takes or they'd have been promoted long ago. |

i didn't mean someone who's got the same title and responsiblities. generally speaking paying your dues invovles working hard and learning hard and doing the grunt work and proving you're worth promoting to a higher position because you'll be damn good at it and worked for it. not some slacker who somehow fucked up and got into a union and now just has to play the waiting game. that's bullshit IMO. clearly you don't know what i mean when i talk of paying dues. and PS there's such a thing as going as far as there is to go. maybe they have a lot more practical knowledge than you and maybe you have a know-it-all attitude (i'm not saying you do, this is purely hypothetical) maybe every other girl who came before you was a know-it-all dumbass and they've just been conditioned to treat all the people in your position accordingly now? i've been the person who's worked HARD for years, and proved that i'm more than qualified and able and then was given the respect and resources to put me at the top of the food chain for the most part. and i know how many people come in with a shitty attitude, and most of the rest of them come in with such poor performance that you, as the one who's responsible for their actions and performance, begin to get rough on them in the way you resented so very much when you were in their spot. those who survive the corporate gauntlet have paid their dues because they've been smart enough and skilled enough to navigate up to the top. does that sorta explain my thoughts? |

Giving attitude, treating you like you don't know anything, micromanaging, etc. are all forms of disrespect. If you're doing a good job and don't need someone on your heels at all times, yet they're there, they've disrespected you and have fully overstepped their bounds. People act like this because they're threatened by you, not because they actually think you're stupid.
I see where you're coming from, I just don't agree. Like I said, paying your dues is crap. Do a great job, prove that you're worthy of a promotion, and you'll get it - as long as your boss isn't a petty asshole who's afraid you won't take his/her job. Personally, as a manager I have promoted over 40 people. I gave them the tools, taught them well, and then gave them the rope - what they did with it was their choice. I am all about inspiring my people and challenging them to achieve and excel, and I have never felt the least bit threatened. If, thanks to me, they get the knowledge they need and apply it effectively, it doesn't only make them look good - it makes me look good, too! Then, when a possible position opens up above me, I'll have them as proof of what an awesome job I do, and I'll have someone to promote into my place when I bag said higher position. People who try to suppress those below them on the corporate ladder only do it because they're afraid that someone else will get promoted before them. Last edited by galaxie; Apr 23, 08 at 01:49 PM. |
