We were in disagreement because of the attitude that some senior employees have toward new/younger staff. You kind of justified it, while I said that the attitude was bullshit and they shouldn't have it. I totally agree that it's difficult to find good people, and I can imagine that in your industry it's more difficult. But, you have to work with what you've got until you are able to get someone better, and if/when you get frustrated with them it's always best to sandwich the criticism, try to be positive, and give them a chance to redeem themselves. Far too often, senior staff treat newbies like they're idiots regardless of their abilities, and this is what pisses me off. I firmly believe that a lot of the turnover in pretty much every industry is due to negative first impressions of existing staff that continue on and make junior employees feel uncomfortable. If managers/supervisors nip this behavior in the bud, and don't exhibit it themselves, it's a lot easier to create and retain a positive working environment.

i think that this is something that won't ever really stop. i think this behaviour is passed on from one generation of execs to another.

It's not executives who do this. It's people who are actually mediocre at their jobs and are threatened by newer, younger, fresher, more driven, more vibrant employees. Executives don't need to act this way because they're already at the top and don't have to be worried about some youngin' taking their job.
