And? Lazy, useless, stupid people transcend industries and job titles. It doesn't matter what type of business you're involved in, as a manager you need to have the skills necessary to recognize and weed out useless individuals.

in order to have lazy, useless and stupid people, well, you'd have to have people. i challenge you to find people to fill half the openings for me. now you'll find so many people who'll say shit like "oh wow you work with horses! i'd love to do that!" but if and when they show up on time (most are scared off by 4-4:30 am starts and 7 days a week thing) they quickly realize that it's not the petting zoo they thought it would be. give me useless individuals over none, most days i'd be happy to have them. at least i can put them to work filling hay nets and doing laundry or cleaning feed tubs/water buckets. to find a skilled horse person or someone who has really good natural feel for horses who shows up and doesn't have personal problems is very very hard.(substance abuse and alcoholism is very much an issue at most tracks they even have a couple AA or NA or CA meetings on the grounds every week.) where as with what you're hiring for, the majority of younger women could and would do if. although it may not be their first choice for jobs, if they need money, it won't hurt them to sell shit to people. i mean, this is what rushour looks like for me. and sometimes you have to deal with a loose horse running blindly at you, with an outrider hauling ass to catch it like this. |

and if the outrider doesn't manage to capture the loose horse, then this is what can happen. these horses don't break stride, can you see how it's just better that i always assume that my new help knows nothing before i put them in charge of piloting, caring for or even going in the stall with one of these animals?
**WARNING THIS IS PRETTY UGLY.** don't watch it if you're touchy about animals and shit, i don't wanna hear a bunch of bitching because you didn't like what you saw, becausse you have been given fair warning. **WARNING THIS IS PRETTY NASTY.** |

maybe this is why we differ so much on our opinions of how new employees are to be handled.
and i am by no means condescending or brutal to them, i take the time to tell them how i want things done, even basic tasks. even if they're coming from another barn because no two barns do things the same and i want it done MY way, not their old boss' way. people who come to the track who are half assed intelligent appreciate this in fact because they understand why. |
