I made a girl cry today

... I almost feel bad for the poor woman.

She came in looking for a job, she couldn't speak any more English than saying what her name is, and then saying "I no understand".

I figured why the heck shouldn't I see if she can key numbers... as numbers are really a universal language... I figured she'd be ok.

She got one of the lowest scores I had ever seen.

And so, I say to her "Thank you for coming out this afternoon. However, we are looking for someone who can key a bit quicker than you".

And then her lip started quivering... and then a single tear dropped down her cheek... followed by several.

I didn't know what to do... I'm not heartless, I'm a bitch I'll admit that... but man... I just ... man...

But I couldn;t just say to her "well, you're crying, I may as well hire you! That'll shut ya up!"

20 minutes later, she's out of my office... and I'm on my way home...

Yeah, it's hard when that happens. When I was manager, I always sat down and had a chat with them when taking resumes and if they couldn't at least carry a conversation, their resume wasn't going much further

Don't feel that bad. coming from a family that had to struggle with the English language to get by was overwhelming for my parents. Not so much for my sisters and me. It should be common knowledge that if you want to be successful in a place where the prodominant language is not your own, then LEARN IT! Otherwise you may get stuck with a shit, cleaning job picking up other peoples garbage. It's a good thing my parents learned that early when we first migrated to Canada.

The best thing that could have come out of your situation would have been the inevitable wake up call that influences this poor lady to go get her E.S.L on.

yup, exactly. Learning English is a must. it sucks that i work with peopel that have been in the country longer than ive been born, and still cant speak english, and it takes so long to understand what their saying, its nearly impossible to finish a conversation with them before you give up. Learning English is a must.

It really depends WHAT language you speak.
I mean, there are people on my campus at work that barely speak english... But they work in a que that supports the different dialects of Chinese or Hindi/Punjabi.
I just think as Canada becomes more and more of a melting pot of cultures, English will fall into the back ground as we welcome so many different languages.

^^^ I Disagree (Silverwinged)

You know, I hope that Canada maintains its two national languages... English and French. English will NEVER be on the back burner.

I hope that we never become THAT multicultural where I look like the bad person for not hiring someone because they can't speak English...

People in this country have a hard enough time speaking French outside of the eastern provinces... could you imagine what would happen if we were to introduce another "native" language?!

I totaly agree with you there, foreign students have many services and opportunities to gain employment cause of their status.

unfortunately for most FOB's who migrate here with the shirt on their backs, minimal English and big aspirations don't have the connections or know how to go about getting those connections.

Employment programs DO work aswell but essentialy a strong command of the english language would be a good start at securing more respectable work than what's offered to people who may not be so fluent.

The more people that decide to come and live in our country, the more demand their is for big business to bend to the will of these people so as not to lose a customer that would essentially generate revenue.

This is the only reason I see English becoming less and less prominant in the years to come.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I think its great that people from all over the world can feel comfortable in Canada - it just seems like a lot of the people forget their roots.

The majority of people/families who move to Canada in the first place are looking to build a brighter future for them/their kids. IN CANADA... they're in Canada for a reason.

I think its fantastic for those who have English as a second language. I think its wonderful for those who can speak a variety of languages. I wish I were more fluent in French than I am.

It's simple... if I move to Germany, I'm going to learn German. I move to Japan... I'm going to learn Japaneese. I move to Canada, I'm going to learn English.

I'm going to help new imigrants learn the native language, not try to make MY native language THEIRS.

I still happen to think that a good chunk of the people that come here are after the money and to hell with anyone who gets in their way.

Its wonderful that you think that way, I know quite a few people whos parents came here simply BECAUSE we aren't as strict as we could be with language, and it was actually easier to get status/jobs here than it was in the home country.

Absolutely. And you know what they come here with? ENGLISH! :D

Where did their kids learn the language... if it wasn't an English school, or a private English tutor, it was because of the English education system (I'm not saying it's perfect by any means, but hey! it worked didn't it?) And who is trying to teach the parents English? The kids!

You need English to get by in todays world, to be successful specifically. Name one Fortune 500 company in the world that is so strict on using their Native language that they shun English altogether, so not to piss off their ancestors in their home country?

Oh I like this part, this part is funny.

Is this where I pull your steez and pull an "..and you are?"

I don't really think that because in my personal opinion if I felt that awful about something, I probably wouldn't post about it on a public forum makes me a heartless bitch. This was probably a very humiliating experience for the poor woman and it just opens up a can of worms about speaking English and immigrants, etc. etc. Again, you can go ahead and ask most of the people on here, I'm anything but a bitch.

I think in these threads when they go into diatribes about speaking the language, a lot of people fail to differentiate between people who cannot speak English well and people who just cannot speak English. A lot of people have a decent command of English but are very shy about it because a lot of people get really impatient if someone's skills aren't tip top, I see it all the time.
