Telus and traffic-shaping?

Uhhm...so a friend of mine is pissed off about Shaw...because of this:

They're fucking idiots and lie to their customers..."naw we don't shape our traffic blah blah" oh yes, they do...bastards! Anyway that crap Ellacoya system does *not* allow her to upload on some P2P networks...well she can upload, but the speed is below 1kb/s...she should get like 60kb/s with her plan. Shaw sucks...it should be up to the customer how to use their connection, after all, they pay for it...traffic-shaping is evil! o.O

Soo...my question...Telus...do they shape the traffic as well? And if yes, what ISP in Vancouver does *not* do this...any alternatives?

Over here almost no ISP uses traffic-shaping...help is greatly appreciated! :)

humm, I have had no problems uploading or downloading on Shaw.
at this very moment im uploading 4 files via torrent @ 25-45kbp each
what P2P's in question are they shaping I would be interested to know

Well...not everybody is affected.

She's been doing this for like 5 years...uploading, downloading, p2p...almost every day, big amounts of traffic. In October '05 Ellacoya got introduced with Shaw...in October '05 her uploads stopped working...coincidence? Naw...her ports are forwarded, she's not firewalled, the XP connection limit is disabled and everything is configured correctly.

It must be traffic-shaping...we checked all other options.

She even asked the slsk administrators and they confirmed...

Funny how they try to sell Ellacoya as a feature...wtf.

They offered her an upgrade, one month for free.

i've been using shaw for quite some time and haven't come across this problem at all so i call BULLSHITS!

shaw is run on nodes, cards.. these cards provide speed and bandwidth capacities but they all go down to our central bandwidth providers.

now, if we traffic shapped it would be on all ports.. me, dabs, feel, everyone including your friend would be having this problem.
We're not.. Telus probably does it cause telus is shit.

do some spyware tests
do some antivirus tests
bypass the router
boot into safemode with networking and try re-downloading.

Maybe your friend constantly goes over her limit, maybe it is time she pays a little more for her service. If she is gonna bogg down the network all the time the it is obvious Shaw is gonna shape her usage..





PS: We never run into this problem in out household and we go through probably 40+ movies a month..

install DU Meter and check to see what your upload speed really is.
might only be 1k/sec in your p2p programs, but someone could be hijacking your upstream.

very doubtful but it's not like i haven't seen that before.

if people go over their limits, they get called, they get a letter sent out, then they temporarily disconect their services.. forcing them to call in.

shaw doesnt shape and they give lots of chances for people to call in.

exactly, if its a wireless, make sure the network is secure and make sure you're connecting to your own network. its easy to not know when you live in apartments, usually the folks around you have good signal strength so you can get confused and jump on to a shitty bandwidth signal.

shaw used to call me on a monthy basis and yes they do give you plenty of opportunities to call in and plead your case for the month. :D
