It's not going to take a lot at all. A big part goes to real estate too, take the shaw tower for example, right in front of it goes the new convention centre, big fucking thing. Needed to dredge up the ocean because Vancouver ran out of space for it, or they wanted it in a prime location. So let's dig up the sea, kill thousands of years of sea life, put some more species on the endangered list. North Van looks closer than ever before. China just killed off an enormous part of the ocean for more real estate.
Now, I'm not going into MP syndrome, but as a huge fan of the ocean, this is just not right. Myra - Well, it's good that you ended it with a joke, I can see that we're on the same page with "the world is going to shit" |

marty are you serious with all this slipknot shit.
as a person: the chances me or my buddies need to go to war is less than at any other time in history, i enjoy a happy clean life -- as do more people at any point in civilization. generally it is rare to have to say goodbye to a loved one unless they are very old or there is a fluke accident. if i want to, i have access to knowledge of almost anything. i can have any job or hold any office i want to. as a society: we understand more and more every day about how our progress affects our fellow man and our earth. we have the capacity and people working on the solutions to all of the problems we create. its only been in the last 100 years that we as people have the luxury of being able to think about things like sustainable living vs the enviroment and working out economic solutions to problems that would have ended in bloodshed before. there will always be problems, things that are ugly, and there will always be things we are fucking up. but, there will always be solutions to these problems as long as we are a society who will put effort towards figuring things out and progressing. as soon as we throw up our hands and go WOE IS ME EVERYTHING IS LOST WE ARE HORRIBLE then nothing gets solved, nothing better happens, and we stagnate and continue to live in a world that exploits people/the environment/ideas for power. |

Good reply.
I whole heartedly agree with your input. Doesnt justify anything, its just you're opinion. But yet, destruction of the planet is happening more than saving it. Scientists have discovered more in space than they have underwater, let's leave it a mystery rather than dry it up. Now, I'm talking about the ocean but everyone knows once the ocean goes, everything dies, yet not a lot of people think about it. When you eat shark fin soup, you agree with shark finning, thus unbalancing the environment, you fish, kills the environment, destroy coral with dredging, and then dredging itself. Everything humans are responsible Then dave goes on about letting us now that life expectancy is going up, thus there's a problem with over population. Granted - there could be a slim chance that we're all dead by the time that this happens, I dont see why there's need to talk about it. but one thing that I'm damn proud of.... I got you to talk without caps. |

I stated i'm just as guilty as anyone.
So what're you going to do? Are you going start changing your eating habits? be part of the sollution? or are you just attempting to be right in this thread? Either way - I don't really care. if you want to be right.. you're right, here's your tiara. |

ppcock, this isn't even really an issue of smokers dying at an early age.
in my two years of working on a cardiac surgery ward-where on any given day there are between 20 and 25 people between the ages of 20-91 who've undergone open heart surgery for various reasons--i can tell you a few things. (talking about this because smoking is obviously a risk factor for developing heart disease) while a smoker might live just as long as someone who spent their entire life being active, eating right, and not drinking or smoking, it's the quality of that life that ends up being very different. there's a huge difference in the quality of life of a 60 year old who is/was a smoker for 30+ years, and a 60 year old who never smoked or quit after smoking for a few years. most of the time the 60 year old who's smoked looks like they're actually 75 years old. they walk like a 75 year old. their lungs sound like 75 year old lungs. they're unable to do anything fun during their retirement years because of various health problems. and back to the heart surgery thing...they take waaay longer to recover and get discharged than someone who had a relatively healthy lifestyle. so yeah, you might not actually live fewer years because of smoking, but the last 10-20 years of your life will probably be pretty shitty. |

my supervisor mentioned to me today that i was a couple minutes late back from my lunch, but no one ever says a word when any of my co-workers leave randomly for smoke breaks. i think i'm gonna start taking up fresh air breaks. |
