but what if ideology is reality!! :weird: lol there are easily 15 definitions for that word, it's such a can of worms.
Anyways, I don't understand why everyone talks about some golden era where people lived in harmony and had strong moral and family values. I call bullshit. We've been fed a consumer dogma ever since the creation of the capitalist system and the ideas behind it. These power relationships have been around for a long time. It's the same argument the American's use to rekindle some romantic notion of the American dream for political needs. This morally correct and picture perfect family is used to sell stuff. Even if you are lucky enough to have a non-crazy family who can actually sit at a table together over the holidays it's very rare everyone present, and the activities you take part in, would be non-consumer. Ralphie in 'A Christmas Story' tries to decode that secret message over the radio to find out it's a commercial to drink ovaltine. You can't escape it. That's just how the system structures things whether it's capitalist or some global theocracy. But don't let all that depress you this holiday lol. Like ebbo said, people have a natural way of sharing love with the people they care about which is what this season is conventionally about. Doing something nice can be infectious this time of the year and can really make someone take a step back from consumer society. |

I am all for consumerism. I am against society imposing obligatory spending on a given date.
I am very much for making an excuse to spend time with family and friends. In fact, I celebrate Christmas twice, Dec 25th and January 6th. That being said I 'passed' on gift giving for several years. Last year I bought something for my girl friend and my mom(she kept buying me things even though I made it extremely clear I wanted nothing) however others ignored my requests and bought me gifts. This year I've spent quite a bit on gifts, not because I've finally succumb to the 'joy of gift giving'(I am not against gifts, or buying things for friends and family, I just believe in doing it at my own prerogative) but because my guilt has overridden my rational decision making process. |
