got_rice, I know what you mean :). If you really miss school then it's time for college or university. I have yet to choose a career path, been working here and there but all the jobs I did suck . I got to think quick so I can go to school and get a better paying job :PartEkid:.

i partied hard for 10 years, but i managed to get a degree and a diploma. all you have to do is buckle down when the time comes and you will be fine. you don't need school to be sucessful, but it sure helps.

i went to parties every weekend and went out 2 weeknights a week for almost 10 years, and i turned out to be someone with a great career. so you can't say that going to parties affect your life forever. just know when you have to actually work and when you can play.

just don't ever drop out, cause its to hard to start up again.

Sad to say... but most adults you talk to in highschool are all dumb asses!!!

I never bothered taking anything harder then comunications or comp civ because my youth experience was more important. Personaly I belive I did the best thing any young person could do and go LIVE/Travel in an other country on my own.

Its been 2 years sence last at school and now im finaly starting to feel like I REALY know what I want to do and want to learn.

Im aplying for post secondary. Luckly I never strest myself to take french/math/or bio etc because turns out ill never need them!

You can apply as a mature student, and I highly reccamend to ppl go take carrer program corses! For fuck sakes why cant councelors tell and encurage them???
For meny you dont even need highschool graduation (if you qualifiy as a mature student) And you can always take the corses you need later if you ever want to upgrade.

What pisses me off about the high school system is kids think that you get the best payed jobs going to uni... so get good grades now, lock your youth up studdying and stressing.
Thats such crap! Just yesterday some chick had her BA and was applying to make coffee for $8 an hour!!!

I wish schools would educate you kids more on finding a trade or cerificate program that have FUN EXCITING classes you can complete in 2 or less years. Then go on to making $20-$40 an hour!!!

Courtney... If your like me and get borde shit and hate "studying" for stupid stuff youll never need to know... Graduate for the heck of it while you can and look into all sorts of programs in colleges ect that can prepare you in no time for a good paying job... and probly be successful! Honestly thers so meny lill jobs out there that ppl need. We dont need a whole generation of enginers and lawyers from UBC(sorry if i afended u)

rhiannon - hm. my school has been promoting trades and what not insanely. the career counsellor at my school, she tries to get everyone to do it. it's really annoying actually..

they should give you more choices.. not just your smart, you take all hard courses and go into ubc/sfu/something.. and you yuor dumb, take all caf classes because your never going anywhere in your life (what they told me.. haha fuck you counsellor bitch..)

and your plan rhiannon, that's basically what i'm going to do. thankfully my parents are okay with (mom's sorta, my dad doesn't mind.. he knows it my choice, my life =) heh my mom wants me to be a speech pathology therapist ro something like that)

phunk - i totally agree. you can party, but you just have to know the right times to do it. sadly, some people can't figure that out and just party all the time. and then there's those who think they can't, and all they have to do is study study study.. bah.. a good balance is great.. =)

up until this september, data analysis for psych at sfu now requires a passing grade in math 12. honestly, I consider finishing math 12 one of the best decisions I've ever made! :)

wrongo..i took a 200 level stats course in December semestre last year, and i don't have math 12...and i obviously didn't need math 12 to pass since i got 86% in the stats course...

I didn't mean to make it sound like EVERYONE *needs* math 12 to pass it (obviously some people are different), but I also think sooner or later (if they haven't already), they're going to put that restriction in because university is becoming more competitive and they're going to want to weed out some lazy people. I figure, might as well take it in highschool if you can...

plus, ubc has low standards remember? lol!! :kam:

This is so true.

I walked away from UBC in my 2nd year because I was so sick of the place and I have yet to get my mind to the point where I want to go back.

Now I wish I could have changed that decision.

If it wasn't for my M.Bs I'd be screwed.

I think it's becoming more common sensical that a BA does not equal a high paying salary after graduation. you won't see many people going into arts because they want a high-paying job (unless they plan on going into grad school for law or to get an mba or something).

joanne, you are soooo right. i have friends with BAs and they are still selling drugs cause they can't get a real career going.

i have more of an art career then them, and i never went to school for art.

here is a tip. if you're going to school for art, before you finish, make a modern art display with dead cats and some cardboard boxes. maybe even throw in a piece of bread, and BANG!, now you have a great art career. you will be the talk to the town. mark my words.

that's not the highschool system teaching kids that. it's probably their parents and their own personal beliefs. I mean come on rhiannon.. we went to churchill! do you know how many asians probably went to ubc simply because their parents expect them to?

my uncle's got 2 daughters, both have degrees (one with commerce, the other with psych) and neither of them have worked a day in their life. their father only wanted them to get degrees basically for show. and some people are just like that..

my personal opinion: I go to university because I want to learn. not only that, but the kind of jobs out there that I want require degrees, not a 6-week course. I'm working hard, but by no means do I think I'm locking up my youth. and yes, school does get stressful at times, but it's all part of a sacrifice to pursue my personal goals. in the end, I think it'll be all worth it.

mugsy is on a distinguished road
i took a year of, didnt travel just worked. my plans on where i want to go\be still havent been solved, all i know is i want to paint. so im goin to cap next year for studio art. personally i took a hard course load at school in grade 10 and part of grade 11 so i coudl do more art in 12, and i still had fun and was youthful.. i was your average frat boy for shits sake. its all on how much you can handle. i found that my year off, even though i was just a bum was useful, i didnt need to travel to find my passion i knew it all along. i think i need school or at least 2 years of it before i start taking off around the world. my highschool pushed trades as well, hell for awhile i thought i was goin to take joinery or some arch welding at bcit.... but personally, i dont want to be educated for one job, i never want to be stuck in the same place fro too long, it would get boring and useless to me after awhile. school i think is only as stressful as you make it, i have no support from my family with what im doing, busting my ass to make enough money to go to school next year, and hoping that my family doesnt throw away and of the work i have piled up in all different corners of the house, yet i dont really feel stressed. i think if you are comfertable with where you are, it isnt that hard.

Ok here's my rant. No offense to anyone, but i found Math 12 to be the easiest thing ever. Not taking math 12, limits your career choices immensely. What many don't realize is math 12 when taken in high school, is shitloads easier then when taken at University. The workload and all the midterms make taking math 100 ( math 12 equiv.) alot harder. For alot of people school isn't your thing. Hey its not the end of the world, because there must be something you can offer the world, and get paid for it.
The reason why i bust my ass 14 hours a day during semster, is that i don't mind giving away four years of my life, so that i can enjoy the rest of my life on a damn good salary. Young people are notoriously short sighted sometimes, there is absolutely nothing worse then slacking off now, and regreting it later on when you just hanging on by each pay check.

In the long run, people who make it in university do make more. Statistically speaking for the first 10 years post-highschool non-university people will have made more money. However beyond 10 years people with university degrees narrow the gap and surpass it, statically speaking. However i don't want to make myself sound like i only care about money. I bust my ass now so that i can be qualified to do the job I WANT. Most people i know at university aren't there for money, they are there to find the job they want to do for the next 20-30 years of their lives. Thats what university does, it allows people to be what ever they want.

Just remember that you don't wanna regret later in life the important choices you make now

BA's aren't entirely useless, they show employers that you are able to think, and are self disciplined and dedicated enough to go through 4 years of exams, midterms and misc bullshit in order to accomplish a goal.

besides im only getting my BA so i can get my MBa afterwards, and i don't really need either for what i want to do later on.

john you should talk, have fun trying to find a job in the tech sector nowadays

ive heard so many people say the tech sector is really weak right now but im pretty confident that i'd be able to find one easily. infact, i already have, as well as many of my friends in my option. i guess statistically its true that the tech sector has gone down in the number of job openings but i havent seen the effect of it yet (atleast not on me).

as for the comment i made, i wasnt being serious! we all know the friendly rivalry science students have with arts students ;)

ps. jo and kev, bbq at my place friday.. be there or be square (you too sean)

Your right the tech sector is weak, and thats awesome for us. Why you ask? Well it means it will drive more people away from it firstly, and secondly right around the time we graduate the tech sector will be coming back. I've heard this form alot of people in the industry. Its like the stock market, get in low and ride it till its high.

We'll be there John, i'll bring Jo some vegi-burgers

the tech sector is going to be weak for a while.

the people who are in the positions now are just going to take on more of a work load, because nobody can pay new employees.

but i bet you are right, if you're talking about call centre help jobs, hahha.

of course people in the industry will tell you that, cause you just paid 20 grand to go to their school.
