Excerpt from "all the critics in new york" -- Westside connection

"Fuck all the critics in the N-Y-C
And your articles tryin to rate my LP
Fuck your backpacks and your wack ass raps
Sayin we ain't real because we make snaps
Sellin 6-fo's to the dab, what you lookin at?
With your Brooklyn hat and your pen and pad, *****
I got a pocket full of green busting at the seams
Fuck your baggy jeans, fuck your magazines"

That about sums it up. a yay- yay

Sykonee will become famous soon enough
Once again at the risk of turning a thread semi-serious, I'm just wondering what people would be thinking about 50 Cent had Dr. Dre and Eminem never 'discovered' him. Most likely he'd still be underground today but would people consider him shite, or be praising him?

It may be certain individuals' tendancy to resist hype machines. One cannot argue that 50 Cent's raise to insta-fame was more due to a well-oiled promotional machine than actual talent. His talent on the mic was always there. Dre and Em' took that potential talent, gave it a slick presentation, and the media did the rest. People who recognize this marketing practice don't like to be thought of as suckers falling for it as many in the mainstream tend to.

However, by doing so, they may also be denying themselves some interesting music. If you tear away all of the visuals, all you have is just sound. Why not just enjoy it on that level? Judge mainstream hip hop by its own musical merits, not the image it tries to present itself with.

If the music itself is weak, however... (*cough*NoLimitRecords*cough*)

50 cent has been around for a long time.........he used to rap with "onyx" back in the day.

And he had a few things that were supposed to come out back in '98, but he got shot, and the label ditched him.

HE's been on the verge of blowing up for a long time.

All of the backpack hip hopers have mix tapes floating around........just hoping dre or puff will get ahold of one and sign them.

Jealousy is a beeotch.

If it's good, it's good. If it's shit, it's shit. Who gives a shit how popular the artist is?

That said, fact of the matter is that a lot of artists DO lose their edge when they start making a lot of coin. MCing is rapping about what you know, your environment around you... what happens when your reality is no longer the gritty streets of the ghetto but instead limos and comfy dressing rooms? What happens to the passion, the desperation that these people have, knowing that MCing might be the only shot they have of making something of themselves? Are they still hungry? Are they still passionate about their music?

This is why you gotta give huuuge props to someone like Jay Z, who's as big as they get and still puts out ill shit.

Like I said.. if it's good, it's good.....

good points but still u've missed out the main flaw
mc's rapping about their surrounding that is.

what seaparates the elite from the ordinary....? lets look at mcs. an mc who raps about thier surroundings is usually basically a technical mc with flow that is catchy. its art. whoohoo we all love it dont we? but whats their mission? do they have a deep message they want to preach? or are they simply just artists who rap about whatever their surroundings are?

tupac shakur. he was surrounded with riches, bitches, rolexes, all the ice he wanted, he was backed by suge knight who is the scariest motherfucker u dont ever wanna know. but what sustained his music?

his word
his head
his heart

dass mah werd bitches
