i think in every scene you have the people who deride the successful artists, whom they percieve as having 'sold out' as soon as they become known outside of their crew or whatever. They usually scorn other listeners who enjoy the artists they percieve to be mainstream, for supposedly buying into the hype that they think is responsible for an artist's fame. Then you have the people who just enjoy the music at face value, instead of judging it based on other factors like how much media attention an artist gets, or how many units they sell.
now i ask you, which of these people is really more influenced by popular opinion? the person who hates something because everyone else likes it, or the person who decides what they like based purely on the quality of the music??? |

Sure I wasnt born when techno started showing up. But I still remember artists like Kraftwerk, Derick May and all the other detroit masters, and what they did for electronic music/culture. I dont listen to hip hop.. but dont go saying "what could you know about oldschool" Just because she's 4 years younger than you doesnt mean you can act far more superior than her. I dont know what "tested01" is trippin on but 2pac is fucking dope. I remember when he came out with his double cd and it was such a big deal cause it was the first double rap cd (if my memory serves me rite) anyways when it came out and i listened to it the first time i got blown away. How often is it that you put in not 1 but 2 cd's and every motherfuckin song is dope and the thought of having to skipp to the next track wasn't even there for a second? fuck that shit is classic
i miss how hip hop used to be in the 90's. When outkast were young with their cd "southernplayalisticcaddilacmusic", old school wu tang clan, tribe called quest, when Death Row Records was fucking off the hook or even farther back into the 80's. Even mainstream then was fucking dope. hip hop has changed so much and im quite curious how worse it can or will get in the future. Well im pretty open minded maybe even better (seems unlikely). For those who wanna read its long, so if you dont, skip to the next posters post :P
Hip Hop isnt neccescaro;y going backwards and needing to go back to "Old School".. Yes, there was the artist rivalry which did trigger not only Tupacs success but along with biggie, when the rivalry set where tupac felt he was setup by Biggie and puffy, escalated to the media and generated a greater number of sales.. The same can be said for snoop, it was when he was shot that it made him seem more realistic as a gangster n shot his CD to platinum. However, Music itself is changing into more of a evolved type of music especially in rap. If you want a mainstream artist who is known with consitent music, pick up Kanye wests's debut Cd "College Dropout", everything from the song "Self Conscience" right through to his first single Through the wire, hits a broader range of subjects through this world that hasnt been heard and this different since Nas's first cd dropped. Who made the comment about Jay-z rapping about nothin but selling crack, hate to say he sang about it over his other albums..The Black album is more of a reflective image of his career and how he got there, he does sound repetive at times but more than the majority is talking about how he got there and why he needs to end because there is nothing left for him to rap about, its about bringing up other artists to be able to take the Rap/Hip hop into a new era. Even somethin like the Making the Band off Pdiddy is a group put together to handle the diversitys with hip hop, it has everything ranging from southern, jamaican, hard rap, talented vocalist, and even a bad ass girl who is showing why it isnt a male run industry and sometimes woman are what is needed to keep the game in check, another label with diversity. I think 50 cent is talented when it comes to his "Slow Flo" but as many believe he isnt the king of the streets, he just sold a lot of copies due to his "Beef" which is the usual case to generate hype and with the bootlegging of his music at Hip hops hottest artist at the time (Or Hottest Pop artist) however you describe Jarule n that sense but if you look at his group, youll see where the talent is and 50 cent even said his own proteges are better Emcees especially Lloyd banks.. 50 isnt out to be the king but just to have had his point out there but if you follow Lloyd banks and Young buck on different mixtapes there cds are droppin soon as well and Lloyd banks can rap and show why rap isnt about jus rapping but pushing things metophorically to a new level and Young buck is the same except he does it in his own way, each emcee being brought out is bringing something new and unique to the table. As for how underground is bringing out artists who arnt just rapping about the same thing, whoever wants to take the time to look it out try these underground artists which jus dropped cds: Royce Da 5'9: Death is Certain Halftooth Records: You dont know the half Solid Underground artists who are jus dishin out new material and they are comin from underground, but that shows the link of how underground and mainstream itself isnt aiming for a pop approach and if it is, its just to link the broad range of the public there trying to hit because it is pretty diverse and big and you cant satisfy everyone. N as for the muther fucker who was railing on tupac, dont rail on his music whether you like it or not, try looking at what he was trying to do with his money n for the kids around him regardless of the money he was bringing in. He could have rapped about the trillion of things orther artists where rapping about, but he chose to be different, n after media got his name out there he used it for the better n its a shame that it had to go as far as a death to settle a dispute, but at least it left a lesson for other artists.. Not every artist out there is not gonna be able to completly stay away from mainstream, but there are a huge number of artists who are succesfully debuting n different weeks with generated sals of at least 400,000 and with that kind of success itself, only the best can come.. Anyways my fingers are gonna get Arthrytis I havnt typed this much since school im done, peace :kam: |
