the beat.
whats been up with the beat lately? they've started playing alternative? changed the time of the straight goods show? reduced the old school sunday's timeslot?
wtf is going on!? it must be because z95 changed their music policy, but damn...this is horrible! all i usually listen to now at work is rock 101...seems to be the only station i dont have to change after every 1 or 2 songs. |

Aight there's 2 primary reasons for the beats change.
1) As mentioned before there isn't a strong enough following in it's listening area to be a complete urban radio station and aquire corperate sponsorship via advertising slots. No major advertising slots no money! 2) Canadian Content! That's right the reason you hear Avril every two seconds is it's part of the deal owning a radio station. The CRTC demands that a percentage of all radio broadcasts must have X amount of canadian content per hour. Now as there aren't that many mainstream radiofriendly Canadian hip hop artists this becomes tough. Again this is why Keisha Chante is blowing up the canadian charts right now. Play it lots and they will listen! 94.5FM the beat didn't even record a listening market in the top ten radio stations last year which hur tthem alot. They have had several key management change overs and with Z going adult contemp it has indeed left a small gap in the market where the beat feels they can gain an edge. If they do not gain an edge they wont be around next year. I hate the new style but I can also understand and appreciate it for what it is. This is why I listen to net radio! |

The way I understand it is that the beat captured Z95's demographic because 'urban' music has become so popular in north america that there is essentially no difference between top 40 pop and 'top 40 hip hop' any more - 50 cent and Ludacris are right there at the top of the regular charts. So, there was a few months back there where Z and the Beat were playing essentially the same music, but the beat had more credibility with the kiddies because they asserted their 'urbanness' and urban is what's 'cool' Z cut their losses, and reformatted themselves to 'contemporary' music for us old fogies in our mid twenties, and the Beat, victorious with the 12-20 demographic, went whole hog for pop and top 40, essentially becomming what Z was two years ago. End result? everyone shifts formats around, and vancouver ends up with one more contemporary listening station (how many do we have now? like 4?) |

when they became more popular than Z with their old format they killed out Z which had to change its format to try and attract a different group of listeners... now that then when they were the only radio station in vancouver that played any R&B and hip hop they had no competition so they just added in the pop and rock and whatever to become full out top 40 like Z once was.... thus capturing the entire market share Z once had before the beat came out and stole most of it.... now they have everyone listening cause there is no radio alternative if your looking for hip hop/R&B/pop

101.9 - UBC CiTR
90.1 - CJSF SFU radio 102.7 - Vancouver Coop radio I know both UBC and SFU have kickin' hip-hop programs, as well as a pretty wild bunch of other shit. Coop usually doesnt dissapoint either. Oh, and no shitty Mcdonalds commercials either. I'm lovin' that. |
