Most of the papers I did in University were 2000 words. 8 pages, double spaced.

What is up with being assigned 10,000 word essays?? Teachers should be looking for quality, not quantity.

I e-mailed this to my high school teachers when I was a sophomore (best two years of my life!) at SFU, the day I had a Lit paper due, that was compiled over the evening.

Alright. mission is set forth: 12 hours to do essay. Should probably start soon. Right after I check Slashdot.

10pm
Wrote up a webpage of all the Geek vs. Corporate war posts I've put up on Slashdot. Sould start on essay. But damn I'm hungry.

11pm
Damn that was a funny episode of Dilbert. Still haven't eaten. Tummy growling. Okay. Gathering money and making trip to safeway. Then essay.

12am
Got to Safeway _just_ before they closed. Grabbed 2 packs of chocolate bars and a thwackload of pop... 9 hours to go... Now I guess I can start. Time to start reading Heart of Darkness.

1am
Spent half an hour reading the first 3 pages of Heart of Darkness. Damn this might be longer than expected. Spent the other half an hour flipping through Cliff's Notes. I knew those were a good idea. Brilliant guy that Cliff.

2am
Began rough work and outline. Put Apocalypse Now in the VCR and watched it all on fast forward. Think I got the jist of it. People upstairs being a bit loud for this early in the morning. Mike's watching Ducktales... Sometimes I wonder what he's doing late at night while I'm asleep. Discard these thoughts as paranoia and continue.

3am
First page completed. Just finished a debate with a sock puppet over whether or not Conrad actually wrote the book about 20 years ago and ever since then it's been a conspiracy to attempt to silence the _real_ Heart of Darkness book written over 100 years ago by his father, Waldo Conrad. Think that the puppet should get his head checked. People upstairs being really loud. I think I'll turn up music to counter.

4am
Chapter 1 done. After finishing it and realizing that I'm only doing a 1500 word essay, I decided I could continue along the path I was working on and just concatonate the extraneous parts of the essay as part of the editing process. Have to really blare the stereo to drown out people upstairs. Damn that's loud... almost like a drill or something. Went outside, counted 11 stars in the sky before they started jumping around and hiding behind the moon.

5am
Went for a drive to get away from the insane people upstairs who were trying to drill away the floor so they could get an easy access into my room. Noticed that my driving skills are better than ever, but that everybody else's seems to have depricated in the last little while. Managed to scrounge out a couple more chapters out of it. I dunno. 150 pages should make for a good first draft, wouldn't you say? Had a fight with the sock puppet. Bloody thing's always trying to impede in my plans... Mike went to bed. His plans to plant an earwig into my brain to impose control over my every action seem to have been thwarted for now... but I'll have to sleep with one eye open. Seems to be that Marlon Brando keeps calling me up and screaming "THE HORROR" in the receiver. Might be secret code for something.

6am
Managed to find my secret stash of artillery and am attempting to flack off the people upstairs from their aerial assault on my room. Had Ride of the Valkyries playing until it blew my speakers. Bloody people upstairs must've sabotaged my equipment. I figured the sock puppet was working for them. Whilst I was shielding their cannon attacks, I managed to churn out the second act of the essay. I think I'm gonna make a dugout in the corner of my room and work some more on the essay so that Mike's troops can't get to me and I can finish this in peace.

7am
Finishing off the sequel right now. Sun seems to have broken on the horizon, but it's a dismal victory we're facing. Marlowe's in the infirmary, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead, Now it's down to me and Kurtz. The enemy barages of Machine guns seem to have kept us from making our advance to the living room to recover the Apocalypse Now video. Have sent an infantry of secret agents to invade upstairs so that they could find a weakness in their defense. Don't know why, but their X-Wings couldn't start up.

8am
The trilogy is finished. Decided to leave it unedited so as to maintain its artistic integrity. My TA will understand. The firefight seems to have quelled momentarily. I'll have to use my super-sonic skills in order to get to the bus stop so I can get up to school and hand this in now, though. We burned the sock puppet in a mass execution ritual where all my renegade clothing was uncovered and punished. Problem is I have nothing to wear anymore. Oh well. Small price to pay for the smiting of one's enemies.

9am
On the bus on the way back from school. Success is mine! I managed to evade the turbolasers of the Uber Cadres at school who were defending the TA's mailbox by disguising myself as a can of Pringle's Chips and pretending I was a special delivery for Mr. Roboto. Am going to brave the frontlines back home and attempt to get some sleep when I get back. I just wish that bus driver would stop grinning at me. I should be home in half an hour though.

7pm
Now idea what happened here, but my stereo doesn't work anymore, my computer is in three pieces and someone tore my pillow to shreds. And the people upstairs complained about some noise stuff and as a result there's an eviction notice on my door. Plus there's lots of pages that only say "All work and no play make jack a dull boy." and then are crossed out and the word "REJECT" is written all over them. Oh well. I'm fairly certain I handed in my essay this morning. Had some weird dreams though. Anyways. 40 hours to go on my Comp Sci project...
I got a B+ on the paper for about 10 hours work. The lesson of the story is do whatever you have to do, invoke whatever muses for whatever reasons... have some kind of little jerk-off warmup exercise (or in this case, one that lasted the duration of the paper-writing process) that you have to do to get the creative juices flowing, have fun with it: it's not as important as the paper. But it keeps you going.

That, and stimulants.

I love you Dave.

I did something similar in English 11 for our year end uber high mark speech. It was all on procrastination and it got me an A baby. I wrote it over the first 3 blocks of school just before English class.

Any topic, no matter how "intriguing", can be analyzed in a paper of significantly less than ten thousand words.

And "qualitive" isn't a word.

But really, you can only get away with that cause it's Lit.

I hate it when I leave my papers to the last minute. I just can't do it anymore. I have a 20 page research paper due at the end of term, and I just can't imagine doing THAT at the last minute. I'd cry and jump off of the Academic Quadrangle.

actually, i find it hard to pear it down. i'm a lit student and my paper is on milton and paradise lost for a 400 level class. anyone who's read it knows there's alot to discuss. profs arent looking for quantitative over qualitative, they just want you to have ample space express yourself properly.

furthermore, i'm supposed to be learning how to write, so counting the words isn't really my style.

boohoo. 10,000 word paper = 3-4 days, 4-5 hours each day, tops. Even less if you're already well educated on the subject of the paper.

I had to write 2000 word papers in grade eight, 5000-7000 word papers in grade nine, and 10,000 word papers in grade ten.

Ask Josh (axion) about our experiences in grades 8-10. I can't WAIT to get to college and university, these papers are going to be a breeze for me. I will actually ENJOY writing them!

^ different subjects, different papers.

This weekend I helped my bf write a 2300 word paper for one of his sports sciences classes. The research was tedious (but what research isn't?), but the actual paper was a breeze. Actually, the most challenging part of the paper was keeping it down to 2300 words. But, I actually enjoy writing papers, and have found them extremely simple since day one.

Joanne, simply because you (and others) may not enjoy writing papers, or may not think writing papers is easy, I DO. Period. There's not a question about it. And like I said, Josh can vouch for the fact that our papers in high school were NOT high school level papers. We both went to a school with an extremely enriched and excellerated program - on average we were writing papers at a first to second year university level in grade ten. Our school was similar to Pre-IB, but more challenging. The kids that went to Pre-IB in Richmond were usually the kids that couldn't get in to our school.

obviously, I don't know about or have ever been to your school before, but using the fact that you guys wrote 2000-10000 word essays of papers althroughout highschool does not say much about the academic level of your highschool. I've written a 2000 word essay in grade 7 for crying out loud. oh, and by the way, my sister was in the IB program.. she told me apparently the schools with IB programs in Richmond unfortunately don't rank so well academically... so.. the fact that pre-IB kids couldn't get into your school doesn't really say much.. but then again.. my sister could be wrong :P

I'm curious to know though, were you guys taught extensively about APA or MLA? and were you guys made to read published research articles written by scholars?

and I never said anything about not enjoying writing papers. and I'm not arguing the fact that you like writing papers. but the fact is, expectations and criteria with paper writing can vary with class, instructor, institution, type of paper and level of the class. to basically call some students whiners for complaining about papers when you really don't know shit about what they're going through is pretty lame.

I'm actually a little excited about writing my paper on the protective role of heme oxygenase by looking at the antioxidant processes and endogenous antioxidants inhibiting proatherogenic events in the blood vessel wall.
