there's nothing wrong with having a marketing gimmick in addition to skill. it's not all about just the sound, otherwise we wouldn't need to even see the dj's, we could just have them play in a room by themselves. a good dj has presence (read: nice tits) as well as ability. if they suck and are getting booked solely because of their looks, that's one thing, but if they're a decent dj and can sell tickets with sex as well as skill, that's another.

showmanship has and will always have a place in music. sure it comes down to skill when you buy an album, but i wanna see something interesting when i go to a show (like tits). why should a dj be any different than another musician? they are already playing someone elses music, can't they infuse the performance with anything of their own (like their tits)? when you see kiss and david bowie, do you just wish they'd quit fucking around with the make-up and get-ups and just play the damn song?

what does gwar spraying the crowd with shit have to do with musical performance? nothing, but it's a performance nonetheless. besides, it's not like they actually participate in hardcore pornography behind the decks or anything. point is that musicians aren't booked solely on musical ability, but also their ability to put on a show and please a crowd. you're assuming that because someone is hot or might have done something "adult" that they must not be a good dj.

this is a little off topic but interesting.
STILL after months of refusing, i am Still recieving phone calls from one management company about signing with them.
this has been going on for months, i get strange messages from other female dj's that they have signed. All of the requirements are that i be a "sex symbol" in the "dj" industry..........
The main manager makes it seem REAL nice, like ill get amazing benifits and lots of exposure..... but not the kind of exposure i am looking for ;)
Last week he called again...
He has no fuckin idea what drum n bass is and has never herd it, he just assumes that he can get me gigs like all the other girls easily.
this time we disgussed the fact that I DO NOT PLAY HOUSE or top 40, so i can not play in house or top 40 venues.
He convinced me that he would be able to snap his fingers and get me a gig in any famous venue i wanted.
im like "yeah sure, you do that and show me what kind of gigs you can get me"
He calls back about a half an hour later asking me for more details so he can give the promoter more info..... the gig was in Vegas, DNB shows are unheard of there......... so WHO WAS I GOING TO PLAY FOR??????
he told me it didnt matter, as long as i looked pretty and could mix 2 records.
what a joke. bottom line is that he just doesnt get it, the people that manage these girls dont know anything or care about their music.
*Also, while we were disgussing gigs, He asked me what i dressed like,
i replied with "not girly, i dont wear heels, tight miny skirts, or clevage shirts, I wont play in a swim suit" ....
he then asks me if he could CUT MY BEATER IN HALF!!! no.

I'd be curious to see if you can actually keep a straight face while defending your side of this topic.

I'm not assuming anything regarding these "artists" talent as "musicians" but warning signals go up when these "artists" and "musicians" are better noted for their gimmick.

I guess some people are just more easily amused than others.

He showed me your profile a few days ago, and I thought you would fit perfectly with what we are doing, so I just thought I'd write you and let you know what has been happening for me, so that you could know, before he decides to move on and sign another female DJ. First off, trust me, anything and everything he has told you is true. I literally touched a turntable for the first time in my life 4 months ago. 4 months!!! In signed with him about 4 or 5 WEEKS ago. In the last 3 to 4 WEEKS, I have played 9 gigs at $1,500.00 an hour or higher, no joke. I was immediately able to quit my job. I have played all over. I've played Boston, Atlantic City, Vegas, San Jose, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Ft. Lauderdale, and even Monterey, Mexico with Tiesto!!! Yup, this last weekend I was in Monterey, Mexico with DJ Tiesto, I couldn't believe it. It was insane. This weekend I will be playing 2 nights in Toronto (Ultra Supper Club, and The Guvernment), then 2 nights in Montreal, then one night in Edmonton. I'm sooooo excited. In addition to all that, I am now repped as well by one of the biggest agencies in the world. They handle everyone from Paul Okenfold, to Pete Tong, to The chemical Bros, Prodigy, Dirty Vegas, Roger Sanchez, Adam Freeland, etc, and in Canada I am repped by the poeople that handle Armin van buren, Benny Benassi, Darude, mark Oliver, Warp Bros, Funk Master Flex, Dj Whoo Kid, etc. I am flying first class, and staying in 5 star hotels and resorts or better, and everything is commped every where we go. I still can't believe it. I have also just shot for the Maxim calendar, as well as a ten page featurel for a new magazine that is based in Canada to be distributed by Maxim, I have been interviewed by a few of the biggest music mags in the world, am doing all kinds of TV show appearances and press interviews, and am playing a DJ with an expanded role in the new Tom Green/Haley Duff motion picture that stars shooting in three weeks. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea, I am really happy, and just wanted you to have an idea of what can happen, and how fast. Anyone who tells you it can't happen fast like this is lying. They only say that, cause they themselves can't make it happen. I know my manager is about to sign a Drum and Base DJ out of Italy, but he hasn't done so yet, and there is still time. Anyway, whatever you do, I wish you success. Keep rockin the decks,

Those poor people, I bet she's bad. :( And she obviously doesn't realize that being a DJ isn't all about money and touring, it's also about the actual music. Good for her for getting so many gigs and regocgnition but I don't think she'll go very far, especially if it's mostly based on her looks and attire (or lack there-of).

haha, yeah, maybe i couldn't. i guess it depends on who in particular we were talking about. again, like i said, i'm playing devil's advocate, i like to argue. but what it comes down to is that shawn didn't point out a particular dj when he made this thread, he generalized. how could anyone possibly say that a dj like this sucks before they even know who we're talking about?

You haven't seen gimmick until you have seen that show. I would post pics, but unfortunately they have been censored by all who went to the show in fear of incrimination.

Evryone from Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kindman, Drew Barrymore and Hally Berry, through Carmen Electra, Alyssa Milano, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, through Kylie Minouge, Christina Aguilera (in Europe), spice Girls, through world Champion athletes like Gabrielle Reece, and haterina Witt have done it. and the list goes on and on. I'm just curious to know your thoughts. In any case bikini posing for marketing should be sufficient, assuming of course that you loog really good in one. Do you? It should be enough, especially if you are an accomplished DJ, that is the most important thing in the end anyway.
