Everytime I have head the saying "word on the street" it has been another way of saying "oh someone that we both know told me something but I can't tell you who it is." It's actually a retarded thing to say b/c if you can't say who the person is why open your mouth at all. It's just opening a can of worms.

Keep it to yourself! I guess another reason for it would be that it sounds cool haha. Maybe that person was trying to impress you with their unique phrases.
