I used to get up early (3am) for work, so some days would be really hard to fall asleep, especially after the weekend! A couple things I try and pass on to others that work farely well.
melatonin, from what jake suggested is really good. I usually take 3 at dinner and pass right out a couple hours later, however prolonged use builds up an immune to it. It took me about 3 or 4 monthes of daily use to build up the tolerence.
Another thing I do, is lay in your most comfortable position, and try to imagine yourself going numb, starting from your toes and going all the way up - and do it really slowly. The best thing to do to try to fall asleep is dwell on something boring.
While i'm doing the above, I'll also pay attention to any itches that may occur over my body and not scatch them! Just think about how itchy they are.
Or, try to playback a favorite movie in your head, starting from the beginning, I playback dumb & dumber as I know it too bloody well.
good luck.
