sometimes it sounds good when im hella baked.... might sound good in the early AM in a chill room... other than that i don’t really see it as party music... allot of it sounds a a bit unrefined and lacking structure...defiantly not something I would go to see exclusively.. lol i think that comic kinda summed it up nicely

I'm excited about dubstep! It slays in a dark room stacked wif bassbins (much like I'm expecting tonight at the Lighta! party - this should be mad times) - and yet it also sets a fine stage for day dreaming when listening on headphones.

And yes, Termite and Dangamouse are doing a grime/dubstep B2B tonight and it is gonna be GLEAT! ; )

Toby (Bias DJ) has been throwing dubstep on our radio show (Shadow Jugglers, Saturdays 7-9pm, CiTR) lately, and I must say, his taste in dubstep is very, very on. Plus he mixes it particularly well : )

Am I the only one who can't figure out the difference between dubstep and grime? Can someone explain that for me? I'm a big fan of grime, but can't get my head around the difference?

Like is the only difference between the two the fact that grime derived from garage and dubstep came from d&b?

First off, its all music and genres are only there to help people desribe what they hear. Fitting music into categories is really missing the point of why music is made in the first place. That being said.....


Grime is more focused on the MC whereas dubstep is largely instrumental.

The distinguishing sounds of dubstep are the Sub-bass and the half-step/2-step drum patterns. Dubstep is slower, deeper and more dub/raggae influenced. In an interview Kode 9 says "The common theme of dubstep is the tempo and low sub bass. In a perfect world anything goes on top of that."

I would liken grime more to garage and hip-hop and dubstep more to dub, breakcore and DnB.

I wouldnt worry about it or over think it to much mate.there near enough the same thing. but as Bobby T said Grime tends to be more MC based and the production is somtimes of a lower standard.

Rephlex records put out 2 compilations called Grime & Grime 2, but i think most people would consider the music on them to be Dubstep, go figure!

Yeah just always wondered what the difference was, since they have 2 genre names for a very similar genre of music, heh. Now that I have been listening to more of it, I notice the difference in production quality as well.

I thought originally the difference was tempo, as grime mixes into breaks/garage, so I though dubstep would mix into d&b, which most tracks, it doesn't. Go figure again.
