well it gets difficult to determine what's house and what's electro house
yes, I hear you on that my friend... the lines have indeed become blurry, as every genre from prog to techno has embraced the synth sounds that gained popularity through the electroclash of the late 90s/early 00s.

Quote:
are certain sounds considered house and others electro?
yes. Absolutely. Going back to what I said above, this is all a lot more clear if you look at it from historical perspective. When the whole electroclash became hugely popular, the signature sound that was associated with it was that 80s new wave synth sound. After the genre had its peak and was slowing down, around 2002/2003, people like Alter Ego started to use those same synth sounds that had made electroclash so hugely popular, and incorporated into more house/breaks like tracks... The end result sounded closer to electroclash, but it was not "clash" like, so people started to call it electro for a little while, to group both electroclash, and this new stuff that was like electroclash, but it was not. Alter Ego's Rocker and tracks similar to it from 3 years ago lead to production and sounds by artists like Mylo, who kept moving away from the "clash" part, and more towards music played at raves, i.e. house and prog! And here we are today, much closer to the house formula, and further from the electroclash... The signature synth sound still remains though, and makes any electrohouse track stand out immediately, and that cliche electrohouse sound is making me almost want to puke, cause it is getting to be too much. The same thing is true of Epic and Hard Trance... all the tracks use a very similar synth... as soon as you hear that "sound", you know what is going to come. Goa trance is also the same, etc...

I find that a lot of online shops don't categorize well... Juno does a decent job, but sometimes they get so many new things, and some of them have different remixes that can make that track fit into multiple categories, so they list them under several genres.

I hope this helps...

well, house-house does not have any particular synth sound associated with it, and the focus is typically not on synth sounds. That is one way to tell things apart. Again, going from a historical perspective, house comes from disco of the late 70s, early 80s. The sounds are more organic, and you will typically hear organs, pianos and guitars (not rock-guitars though :-) with a slight emphasis on drums and snares (ooo, and claps!) (too much emphasis on drums makes it tribal-house :-)

What ever happend to calling it "Dance" music :?

It's getting to the point were ppl are just colaberating anything possible that its hard to really label any kind of music. Personaly Im anoyed... I understand trying to describe your sound, but I think in some ways its getting a little anal and too technical. Music is an art, not a science text book.

Ooh boy. I sure hope you guys are wrong about minimal prog becoming mainstream house in 2007. The recent Booka Shade and Trentemøller essential mixes were utterly boring in my opinion. House is supposed to make you want to dance :\

Oh, and props for the "un-tiss un-tiss" comment :D :D

Although all kinds of house are being created and played no matter what fase were in... I think the majority of listners go on a rotation, much like how every couple of years music goes in fases on the radio.

I fell for minimal when I heard it mixed with tribal over a year ago. And since the summer ive finaly found a liking for techno since male model machine teamed up. Much becuase I was a huge fan of dj shift and his dirty bass lines... well now he is still carying that dirty bass, but alot of techno elements added on. In otherwords ive been introduced gradualy and becuase its linked with an other style I love I can easly listen and enjoy it.

I think this is how a lot of music changes and progresses. It carys a sound ppl are already familar with and introduces another. People of corse get boared and want to listen to something new, but at the same time her something familar. I dont think minimal techno will be what is right now or a few years ago, but im sure it will get big as someone will make it have a more main stream sound that everyone can enjoy. It wont happen over night, but as you keep listening to music a lot of minimal/techno elements will be slowy brought in (what many are already hearing)
