Hey pal, you shouldnt even be opening your mouth at all. You posting a mix with PIRATED DUBPLATES is nearly just as bad as the fake DJ mentioned. EDIT. Thats funny that you even mention all vinyl sets, coming from a dude that DL's and plays 128kbps ( Not playable quality ) Illegal Dubs on their mixes. Lame. Man – what is up with Vancouver??
Really, the community should make it so lame ass DJs and lame ass promoters are not supported and can’t survive. Is it just an uneducated community? Too many drugs? Wtf? There seems to be a nice handful of very talented DJs and a few real decent promoters. But there also seems to be far too many psedeo-rockstar-coked-up clowns out there. |

I have demo CD's handed to me all the time by new peeps but I have to be honest with you, I don't trust the demo. With technology as it is today and a LOT of these demos being mixed via computer, I always wait to make my decision AFTER I've seen the DJ play live.
When it comes to myself, if I want to play for a particular promoter or club night, I actually guest list them or invite them down for a drink to a nite I'm playing at already... even if for 20-30 minutes, at least they can see me live -- mixing style, programming, ability to read a room, etc. That in combination with referencing them to people who have already heard me play (ideally the existing residents are great) is another good source. And for those that do a search via Soulseek instead of going to your local record store or purchasing legit online... LAME. |

Man Id love to see the look of panic on the DJs face as the floor clears when people don't like the way he/her is 'selecting.' Their inability to wing it and NOT mix using the first/last 32 beats (boooooooring) would show through pretty quick, as would their lack of track knowledge. Ive said it before and Ill say it again. DJs should require a license to play out before they, well, play out. This would eliminate any pre-beat matching, funk faking, milli vanilli mixing and definitely remove most of the doorknob DJs from our clubs! |

I admit I shouldn't have done it. Posting the mix was a VERY bad idea. I've gotten tongue lashings from a few people already (which where totally warranted) I've spent thousands of dollars buying vinyl, so Im definatly a supporter of the industry, ok. Get over it?? PS- I think DJ Soo's comment about you doing exactly the same thing a while ago is pretty ironic. If you DL'd the mix, delete it. We're all happy. |

the idea of this actually makes me quite sick. Soulseek is the reason that DIY labels are so hard to get off the ground. If you want progression in your "genre's" pay for the fucking music. If you are a wack dj like this thread suggests, slit your wrists, jump off the bridge,
give me your brand new technics, i will show you what you could have done with em... HAHAHAHAHHAH |

I've seen people drop famous producers' names in the file name if their music styles are similar. They do it so that when keyword searches are done for those dj's/producers in programs like Limewire their shit comes up as well. Keyword Spamming? But if you're going to do that AT LEAST mix the thing yourself.

Lawrence -- keyword spamming is perhaps one way to accomplish getting a mix with your name on it into someone elses iPod, Realplayer, iTunes, Winamp, etc. Maybe it's one of those many things you can do for exposure or your own P/R out there in the scene.
Addition thoughts if you're wanting to play out - be sure to master: - beat matching - know your equipment - how to fix technical problems on the fly is critical - track selection and programming - ability to read a room (in a club, getting people to dance is one thing, but getting them to the bar to drink is another and is what will get you booked again) - buying your fucking music (digital or vinyl) - come prepared - bring your own needles, headphones, hell bring slipmats as you never know - personal P/R and promo skills - a passion for the genre you love to play (deep knowledge is a good thing) - producing if you have the creative juice and time... I could list more, but you get the idea. |

yeah. all really good points DJ Kraig. Reading a room should be why you start dj'ing in the first place. Knowing the equipment is sooo key. Walking up to a mixer trying to figure out how to fire up the cue and which line goes to what is the suck.
DAMN RIGHTs. BUY YOUR DAMN MUSIC. PAY YOUR DUES. If you expect to get paid, you better be ok with dishing out some dough too. |

good points, but there is one thing i dont understand... how does a DJ get people to buy drinks? I guess just a vibe thing? people who are having fun drink more? hrmm some people it could be the opposite though.. ie music is too good they spend most of the time on the floor dancing.... music is awful.. mine as well get drunk..

It's actually pretty tricky in that you need to keep the energy up and not totally clear the dancefloor, rather you need to get people on the dancefloor off and perhaps attract people off back on. You also need to keep an eye on the bar to make sure it's not full already. No point getting people off the dancefloor when the bar is already full. |
