^^ You're speaking of parties. 1 hour slots are not that common in clubs -- at least clubs playing House and as Soo mention, definitely Hip Hop/Top 40's.
But you're right... when Im playing Breaks at clubs like Cyber unless I'm tagging with someone, sets are only an hour maybe 1.5. |

^ honestly think that trend should be pulled back myself - 1 hour is not enough time to really build a mix so most djs just try to throw down all their anthems or "big tunes" nowadays cause all they have is an hour to play for - hard to build a flow to the night when the dj switches up so quickly (especially in Cyber's case when most people get 1/2 hour sets).

I agree one hour isn't enough. I've been fortunate to play many 3-4 hour sets (primarily House) which has been GREAT. To build a floor from nothing to a packed club is so awesome. Complete control of the energy on the floor... very cool stuff. Let's keep in mind, booking DJ's for parties (today) and clubs is very different. |

i actually like both. i regularly play 1/2 hr sets at the open dex night at anza and i love it because i can play these hyper-specific microgenres and totally pin it. but i also like a solid 2 hour set because i can move through a lot of those microgenres and make something coherent and also expose people to a lot more of what i'm feeling and hopefully some stuff they haven't heard before/yet.

^^ Agreed. And I remember seeing some wicked performances at the Big Trouble Battle Royales, where about a dozen and a half local DJs all threw out 20 or 30min sets apiece.... There was some serious creativity going on in there.
I'm not gonna shun a set because it's short. The party doesn't revolve around me just because I'm controlling the music. |

it's one thing when you're doing an open deck or the battle royale style concept for Big Trouble (*cough* former winner here *cough* :D) but for regular parties and club nights, i'd rather see DJs get more time on the decks - even if they aren't the headliner...
Personally, my favorite length is 2-3 hours. Any more time and fatigue starts to set in (longest set I've played is over 6 hours and I was exhausted at the end). |
