ya ive heard of a couple of locals (who will remain nameless.. )
that have done/do this seriously like why bother if you cant live up to whats on your demo when you play out if you want some feedback of course there nothing wrong with getting someones opinion on track selection or whatever but im sorry if you wanna slap your name on it you should physically be the one mixing.. imho |

and that being said.. mixing isnt the only part of being a dj.. but its a pretty good fundamental requirement. |

Im assuming they would get someone else to record for them becuase some people just dont have enough time to make a cd. Especially if doing it by hand on Ableton Live...
I find that there should also be a difference aswell in between the quality, "Demos" should be mixes displaying your skills in a one shot mix, those should be done by the dj themselves. Labels sell compilations, and these can be done over a course of a day-week depending on the work load, and in the end any person can slap their name on the cd to brand it. A prime example Dj Deans Tunnel Trance Force compilaions clearly show the mixing lately is all done on a computer. Usually its done with a TON of help from his studio techs, but in the end since he selected the tracks... and did SOME work, he took the credit. Locally though, i dont think there is a need, and if someone has done so... good for them. with the scene today; everyone wants to be a rockstar, in the most laziest way. |

Ben: i agree, when you are dealing with a label and production studio and they have big money on you.. its not so much about your skill at making a flawless mix..
its about marketing you and its a big collab with all the resources your provider has to offer. but yeah, for a promo mix that is supposed to be used to showcase the djs talents.. in hopes of attracting promoters.. having someone do your work is not only lazy but very unprofessional... (IMO) |

well some promoters book on other things. look, image, gender etc.. i mean for instance.. if someone is putting on an all midget show.. you have to book midgets.. even if they are mediocre behind the decks. |

holy fuck, when is this all midget show you're talking about? i'll finally get a chance to show my skillz.

Unless you're absolutely godawful, nobody notices the mixing except for DJs.
Track selection is seriously 90% of the job. ** The fun variation on this theme is the Live PA act performing on synths that aren't plugged in. Usually this doesn't happen with locals though... just big names on tour. |

i think the funniest part of that link is this reaction:

we busted one of the long term local dj's in whistler playing a cd one time in garf's. sure had a good laugh bothering him about that for the next couple of years. |

i used to have a midget do all my mixing for me, he'd set up on another set of decks underneath the DJ booth and i'd just read the crowd & tell him what to play. worked like a charm until he started demanding a bigger cut of the loot, i actually had to learn how to mix myself.
