I already said The Clash. It's not preference, it's history man. Look at all the 'punk' music before them, and then look at the massive movement that followed. The Ramones brought that to North American society, but that's pretty much the same as saying Bob Marley invented reggae.

The band originated from a group called The Strand, which was slightly more progressive. The Sex Pistols' label, EMI, wanted an answer to the progressive/psychedelic music that ruled mainstream rock at the time (IE, Pink Floyd). So, despite the influence, in reality they were the Britney Spears of their time. That's not very punk of them, now is it? Last edited by tiedye; Jan 08, 07 at 08:09 PM. |

The Clash & The Dead Kennedys are probably the best bands to play punk rock. I'm not a huge authority on the genre but these bands came with great songwriting & musicianship where most of their peers owed more to their image. DKs would more be considered 'hardcore' i think but they definitely influenced a whole sub-genre of arty punkers, like Nomeansno & Alice Donut. The Ramones & Sex pistols are just as important but imo can't be considered great bands in terms of musicianship. Last edited by Wood; Jan 08, 07 at 08:27 PM. |

I've always been a Dead Kennedy's ...fanatic..I guess you could say..
but I gotta agree on the Clash with history..but the Ramones man THE RAMONES..but what about bands like Misfits..D.O.A...the UK Subs..the Dead Boys...Leather Nun..Anti Nowhere League...CHeap Sex...Crass ...Discharge... even the Devotchkas.. ....there are so many bands that fly under the radar who influenced the sub-genres..or just added to the revolutionary wave. I think we owe even the smallest punk bands just as much respect for what they've done. |

Good choice, although face to face is my favourite punk band i'd say Bad Religion is the best or one of the best. They're lyrics and music are so inteligent and meaningful it sets them above alot of others.
Personal favourite Bad Religion song is 'Infected'. |

Because the Dayglo Abortions aren't punk mang. They're grunge metal, if you ask me. Grunge of some sort, but not punk.
