Who to send promos to in Vancouver?
OK so i have been asked by a fairly major DJ to put together a promo package (not just a cd but a full on package) and send him a bunch for him to pass around his contacts in the scene (i guess he thinks i can get signed to an agency or something). I figured if im gonna do this i might as well do it right and send it to a bunch of other people as well. So around Vancouver who would the best people to get this to?
Now before you start listing people u need to know that im under 19 (im 17) so giving me the name of club owners doesn't really help me that much. Im looking for people more like the guys at twisted who put on all age events and who would be open to hiring an underage DJ to play. Also any DJ agency's in Vancouver (if there are any i dont know haha). Also you should know i play house so DnB promoters wont really help either haha. Thanks a lot for your help Chris |

Start posting some demo's on the board and after making a couple friends it'll all flow from there. Also there are threads here with promoters looking to fill spots for Apex so check those out and try and get in on Apex '08. Lots of new people have started out there.

I don't know if you should be trying to do club bookings and promos when you can't actually get into the event...
If you don't have the experience or resources, you are just going to make things difficult for both of you. I know it's harsh, but clubs don't want to deal with 17 year olds. |

if you take the next two years and focus strictly on the craft, you'll be a force to be reckoned with man. listen to lots of music, work on your individual style, buckle down on technique... there's so much learning required for a dj to be great at what he/she does it's endless really. The thing with getting out there at a young age is it could work for you negatively or positively. pros : networking, experience in a real "work environment" cons: if your getting out there prematurely, people aren't gonna go easy on you just because your a kid. Sure every dj might have a bomb night, but that doesn't change the fact that people will remember - and when there are thousands more dj's willing to fill your slot, you better make sure you've got some game. |

if you're networked, you can still play. My friend has started small in Abbotsford clubs, sure, but he's gotten pretty good now and wouldn't be surprised to see him work his way out into the city here. Just network, start small, and go from there. |

and for anyone else interested my new promo mix will be up in the download section within the hr. look for "Chris Harrington - December 2007 Promo Mix" should be obvious lol. so im seeing almost everyone saying networking is key (pretty much what i expected) so i will have to work on that. @ -evil-duerr-: U made some reall good points there, gave me some stuff to think about:) Thanks a lot for all the replys guys :) Chris |

the best thing in the DJ world is to network with people through a push strategy while promoting yourself through a pull strategy.
Push yourself on promoters, so to speak. Get to know them, let them know what you do. Just get to know them basically. Pull strategy is making a demand for yourself. You're no longer selling yourself to promoters, but rather the consumers will be demanding you, so to speak. This you can accomplish right here on FNK, by a) being a productive poster b) being funny and c) posting good mixes of course. The push strategy will allow promoters to know who you are (but won't book you most likely as DJs are a dime a dozen), and the pull strategy creates your demand. Boom, promoter sees people like you, they know how to get in contact with you, you've got a gig. Marketing and agency services for DJs apply within, kthx. |
