Current Cutting Edge?
So what is the cutting edge of dance music right now? Who's pushing new sounds or is it more of a rehash of the old?
I'm really bored of the current tech house and I perfer the electro house from 3 years ago, fidget is a bit more exciting right now but I don't really have too many of those types of tracks. I really like tribal house, but I'm starting to feel like it just been "done". any thoughts? |

cutting edge is very subjective right now.
imo there is no musical genre sweeping the world, a couple of genres and styles are still getting shine (dubstep, "ironic" 90s house resurgence, electro, dancehall) but nothing is dominant or will pack a huge club. if anything i think the top party djs in the world are very inclusive of a lot of styles, house/electro/hiphop/dancehall/dubstep/whatever. right now is a huge buffet of music going on and very eclectic, nothing is really breaking through. |

Rob nailed it here. If you're a resident at a club these days, guaranteed you are not playing one genre and are bouncing around all over the place.

It's fine it a dj goes from tech-prog-tribal-electro or DnB-Dub-Gabber-dance hall. There has to be some kind of boundry unless your a Mike Realm/Ztrip. Some kind of cohesiveness to a dj set is essential for me. Is it possible that we have finaly exhausted genre defining sound design (Dub/dnB wobble, reese or Electro Saw bass, cut and paste basslines)? |

ya i like it, it's refreshing because it's not all about synth basslines. All the other hot dance music genres right now kind of sound the same. Wibble Wibble Warble Warble Blip BLip Blip Beep. Don't get me wrong I like that shit, but it all sounds the same haha. |

It all comes down to the night you're playing at. At Big Sexy Funk Saturday's at Shine, you have got to be versatile. That night is all about the funk, so I keep it funky but bounce between 95BPM Hip Hop, to mid tempoish stuff from 100 to 125BPM and in the later hours, up to Breaks at a max of 130... But... if we're at 125BPM at say 1-2AM, we've also brought it back down to 100... Always keeping it funky. On a side note, I hope that Electro House has been exhausted, though sadly, I doubt that. haha... eww tech house into dubstep? I don't think even a master like Z-Trip could make that sound good! ;P

^^ahh didn't say it was impossible, i just said it wouldn't sound good. ;)
techhouse into dubstep would be way to jarring of a transition, the two styles have such a different type of energy - good way to clear a dance floor. Electrohouse into dubstep on the other hand sounds great because the two genres have a similar energy. |

YouTube - Solar Fields Feat Krister Linder, Live at Les Dominicains, 4/7-09
I'm not too sure if psychill is anyone's thing... but when I think of someone really pushing the boundaries, its Solar Fields... I would have killed to be at this event :) |
