Here's my take now. We need DJ's and quite simply good DJ's usually equal good times. I guess the question I'd ask would be where would all you DJ's be if nobody was producing tunes for you to play. DJing is fun and can be very rewarding to a persons creative spirit but it doesn't push the envelope, it doesn't create new genre's of music and if nobody spent the endless hours producing in the studio we wouldn't even have DJ's.
DJ's GET WAY TOO MUCH CREDIT!!!!!!!!
Producers set the vibe.
Producers create the music.
Give a little credit where it's due.

Yeah, this was kinda true 4 years ago when DJing was "cool".
Really the only way to get recognition in the DJ scene these days is to start producing. And sometimes you'll see a producer get booked as a DJ who really doesn't know how, simply because they're a producer.
I'm not saying DJs are underrated (cuz they're really not), but in all honesty even good tunes can lead to crappy shows if the guy behind the decks has no clue what he's doing.
Presentation is key. For that you need a performer.
