Dj Competition

hipnotik records is in the stages, of planning our second dj competition, we had one about 2 years ago, and it was a really good time. This year , we have a space in our basement that is the same size as the actual store and has a seperate entrance, which allows us to go alot later , and louder and accomidate more people, just wondering if theyre would be anybody who would be interested in participating?

i always see threads about who the best dj is , why not try and show it, this may also give some people who dont normally play out as much as others, and a chance to show there skills.

as far as judges and judging criteria, we are not sure what we are gonna do this time, suggestions would be helpful. Last time we had some djs that were really experienced in their specific genre. we also had djs play whatever type of music they wanted in no order, maybe this year do all house djs together and all breaks djs together etc etc, and maybe even do some tagging, not sure yet

ive been askin you guys for a while now when we are goin to hold another one, im all about it!

it is a good chance for dj who have it, but dont have the chance to show it!!

the last one was a good time 4 sure! and im sure this one will be even better!

if you do something like this you should probably make a seperate category for turntablist.

first off, yes pp, we were thinkin bout somethin like that where u would play a different genre than what u normally do so theres no planning.
and when i spoke to my partner bout this he immediately said that we should do somethin to do with turntableism., maybe even mc battles,
now that we have a venue we cna use for free, we will be sure to do all different types of nights, because i doubt we could do this all in one night,
thered also be some beers available
and of course prizes for the winners

Sounds like fun... I think it should be all about those who have never played a major show before... new DJ's, MC's or whatever to showcase some skillz.

Although I don't profess to be any sort of master IE: like a Czech or Precise, I would be more than happy to judge or participate where appropriate!

if my memory serves me right, the last one was all about mixing skillz......5 tracks in under 20 mins or sumthin, just curious to know how is this one goin to be judged with so many different genres?

I'd be down on judging...with kraig up there... I figure 11 years in clubs and 15 years total playing many different genre's would be beneficial in being a judge.

im glad to see a good response form everybody , to awnser some questions:
im not sure how we are gonna judge it yet, and are lookin for suggestions, also, last time, we had dabbler scotty oh, kyle joygasm, and another house guy to judge, and i know im forgetting a few others, tripwire was also supposed to help out but couldnt make it

as far as prespective judges, i appreciate it, but in a way id almost like to have guys who play at big partys compete against average joe djs, but again thats not up to me, and im gonna try and compile a a fair and well respected judgin staff

Regardless of how this event turns out, there is probably a need for a regular night somewhere that newbie or amateur DJs can play.

Maybe to reduce the pressure it could be a low-key event once a week or once a month. Not a big event once every year or two. The night could rotate to different places that specialize in different types of music.

u should see our spot we ahve for this, i think its the perfect size for an event like this, it can only fit around 60 to 70 people at the very most, and we have access to it, all the time.
with all the genres and dj's wanting to compete, were gonna have to do more than one night....i hope
