matéo is a jewel in the roughmatéo is a jewel in the roughmatéo is a jewel in the roughmatéo is a jewel in the rough
But it is a problem.

The reason why no one at raves doesn't have a feel for progressive is b/c promoters/djs from here have hammered out "Hard Trance" and only "Hard trance" at every single godamn rave(minus a few) held in a large venue. What are the majority of people going to say if thats the only thing they hear? do you think the majority of the people who crowd that room actually have heard other forms of electronic music? I would say theres a huge percentage of ravers in that room who have only been exposed to that kind of sound. AGROdave broguht keoki (electrohouse) ken ishii(techno, sometimes minimal) and has brought out other acts that havent played hard trance and the room still goes off. A rave should have flow, start things slow @ 10 and work its way into something epic @ 3 ending nicely w/ something chill @ 8. Thats only an example of what a typical rave would be like in somewhere like europe. It makes it easier for the more mature listeners to appreciate that dj playing at 3 when the one before him isnt playing the same shit.

im pretty much done.

Wicked thread. It's good to see that so many people know what's up in terms of piecing together a line up so as to create a journey in attempt to bring about cool vibes and a more interesting night.

As a DJ living in Vancouver, it's been pretty damn f***ing frustrating to see so many people be SO PICKY about what kind of music they want to dance to and be completely uneducated about it in the first place. I mean how many damn times has Darude played here for crying out loud??? It's gotten to the point where I don't even care to really go through the effort of playing out here because it just isn't worth it. You go out and play anything other than 'hard trance' or breakbeat anthems and people stand around scratching their head.

That being said, I would very VERY much like to see much of what has been talked about here be put into action. Enough with the epic uplifting trance nonstop from 9PM-7AM every damn party, it is BORING. Promoters, start taking more chances and throw some other godddamn DJs into the mix. You aren't making things any better for the state of Vancouver's music scene by regurgitating the same old crap lineup every single time.

Matty, you freaking ROCK.

Coincidentally, I was just talking about this on Friday night. For anyone who's interested, Tyler Johnson is interested in playing a good party. I think a party with him, Johnny Fever, maybe Kevin Shiu...hey wait a minute, maybe that's why there hasn't been a party with Progressive House, we party every damn Friday at the Lotus, and then after at Gorg-o-Mish, with some of the best damn DJs in the world. :)

But really, I'd absolutely love to get involved in a party that pushed the barriers like that. I know there's a market for it, Gong Show proved that all-nighters can be done that aren't the typical ones Vancouver is used to. With the right people playing, and the right type of promotion, it could SO go off.

If there's any promoters in town with the balls to do this, you know how to get ahold of me. I'd love to be involved. And get Matéo involved, damnit. That kid's got some of the best forward-looking vision in this town.
