St Anger is was awesome says nuff, but hey thats just an opinion.
I was JUST about to mention how fucking hard playing Battery is (just the rythmn)... and I agree, most metallica rythmns are a LOT more than just the average power chords... I know guys that have been playing death metal super fast shit for years and still fuck that one up...

as for influences... I'd say tool and a perfect circle... whenever I pick up the guitar and make something, its not difficult to find out that these are my favorite rock bands... sometimes I'll scrap melodies for being too "tool/apc" sounding... ishq, kaya project, ashera, and adham shaikh are huge influences for the ambient I've been making...

my trance influences:

Armin van Buuren - my fave DJ who has had a big impact on my sound preferences
Tiesto - my first fave DJ... truly got me into trance
Above & Beyond (and their Anjunabeats label) - the producers who exemplify the kind of trance sound I like
Sasha & Digweed - listening to their sets teaches me how to program and mix properly

and K-Pryde - showed me a lot about just everything in general! esp. DJing and its many aspects

now I'm off to discover my house and progressive sound... ;)

Oh you mean like when they did the Black Album, Load, and Re-Load. Metallica hasn't been METAL for a long time man.

You need to go back to the days of Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All to break the category of 'Modern Rock'
