I took the last year off to finish school so I haven't seen too much time on the decks. I hope to be getting back into things a bit more come september. Anyway, My List: 1. Influenza: Their production keeps getting better and better. 2. E-Man: One of the guys who turned my head to some of the different sounds of breakbeat along with guys like Kyomi and Skyles and Fluid. Tight mixing and excellent track selection. Wicked every time. 3. Soda: I haven't seen anyone else do more for breakbeat in this city. He is definitely the man when it comes to breaks. 4. OJ: Maybe I'm a bit bias but OJ has to be one of vancouvers best kept (not so secret) secrets. He kills it every time. 5. Czech: There's a reason why he's on everybodies list. 6. G-Rock: Love his energy. 7. Mateo: The best DJ to come out of Surrey, EVER! 8.And yes, the whole EDIT/WFB crew(Shakes, OJ, Myself...and others) **shameless plug** and 20Hz Crew. he's not either of those things... good OR deserving of that title... although since it IS Surrey I suppose the title doesn't mean too much, does it?
kinda like sayin he's the 'best' deformity to come from birth control pills of the past guess they didn't work for much else than lowerin his IQ, did they? |

The question asked was "Who are the top breaks DJs in the city".... the point I was trying to make was though there are many good breaks DJs in the city, the top ones are the ones that are out there pushing the scene and making $$ doing so (though not much at that). They have to be considered the top cause they're the ones getting all the play. I know many will argue, and say well the top DJs aren't neccesarly the ones playing the most.... but i call BS. Part of being a DJ is being a business man and selling yourself now a days... those that want to cry and moan and say they get no love don't work hard enough at it.
I don't want to blow my own horn.... so i won't but there are only a few of us that have actually made a name for ourselves in across North America and Europe. If you ask someone from say Toronto whos the top breaks DJ in Vancouver, they will say Czech, or maybe Spence (aka Slim).... I bet 100% they won't know who half the cats on most peoples list are. The real question I guess in this thread should be "Whos YOUR favorite breaks DJs in the city?". Oh and how come Priceless and Shakes be getting no love? They play more per month then most of the cats on peoples lists play in 6 months?! -s |

guess it depends on what your opinion of 'top' means
top skills or top bills? they're not one and the same, that's for sure one of the main things that keeps me from diving headfirst into the Vancouver scene is this whole attitude like u gotta sell yourself out to get anywhere... if I wanted to sell myself I'd have gone out and bought all the tunes that are big and only those tunes... I'd get way more gigs that way, but I'd prefer to play what I wanna play and do what I wanna do and be unknown in Vancouver if I wanna play parties I can always just talk to friends in the interior :) |

That's anywhere, not just Vancouver. You have to go out and get yours. I don't think buying the "big tunes" has anything to do with it. ~bless~ |

Producing DJ deserve more money, period. Regardless if they don't mix as good as joe blow. They are acctually contributing to the music scene. Records sales do not make shitloads of money for the artist, all the money comes from the gigs. So in my mind they deserve way more just for that reason alone. |

Naw man.... going out and buying the big tunes isn't what helps you get the bookings. I've never once sold out..... I play party tunes.... deep tunes.... rock breaks.... mid tempo funk.... drum n bass all in my sets, and everything I play I like. I won't play a tune if I think it sucks....
You got to have your own style and work really hard. If no one knows who you are, regardless of your talent and skills you won't get bookings. -s |

soda because he does some tricks and has funny hats.
priceless cause he feeds me beer. ritchie cause he lets me into tha clubs shakes because he shakes it. muchi cause i like his hair. czech cause he has deep crates. e-man cause i use to work with him. this is gei, thanks for the buzz LF... i guess i could have stuck to the deeper breaks, but it was deffinately a pigeon hole when alot of good tunes in other genres started passing my eyes. I like music, not genres.. but thats just me. |

yeah, it's funny cuz I act like I know what the Vancouver scene is like, but it's such a big scene that I've only seen a few parts of it... and I haven't bothered to even try and get myself known yet, so all the bitching I do is pointless, LoL
my plan is to make an arseload of professional quality demos and just give them out to everybody and their dog, then go from there... just gotta get some money together for it |
