hmm... music spun:
Noize, Digital Hardcore, Experimental, Gabber, rhotterdam, Speedcore. what inspired? I wanted to hear my favoured genres of music on a really really big sound system. who inspired? Dr. Doom (the comic book character), ROB GEE!!!, Neophyte, My self |

I spin breaks mostly.
I started CD-Djing @ school basketball games. We'd "Cd-DJ" hip-hop and rap. I've always wanted to become a DJ. The idea of having power to control a room full of people is just great. Well, DJ Rectangle inspired me to become a DJ. His infamous mix tapes are something any DJ should hear. But it terms of spinning Electronica, it would have to be DJ Icey. |

If I wasnt a girl I would of started spinning 7 years ago! But evry time I asked to try it or show intresst I always got a little giggle or a retard look as if to say "um yah right, like a girl could spin?" "be carfull, you might break somthing, or you dont know what your doing" "haha you kidding right" It wasnt intill I started partying I was then quit shocked to find out that there is such thing as a female DJ. Befor I though I was just another tom boy. And then noticing that there is FAR less competiontion being female(which makes it easyer) I went for it! However, I still notice that no matter what the best DJ in the world could never be female in socity right now, she could only be the best female DJ. There seperated in two groups. You have your DJ group and then your female DJ gorup. We still live in a sexest world. But to boil it all down I think it evens out, a female DJ has it easy getting gigs and entertaining a crowed. However I think fgemales have it much harder getting reconized for their talent rather then their looks? Last edited by Wellbelove#1; Jan 04, 02 at 04:41 AM. |

DJ's are represented by an image of a "cool talented guy with swarming chicks all around" How is that supose to inspier a girl or make her feel comfortalble to try dj'ing? |

Dj Mea, sells herself through sex. It is loudly proclaimed on her site, that she is, a sexy girl. I feel no guilt for thinking of her this way. She got what she deserved. Lisa Lashes, sells herself through sex, showing off her large tits in skimpy outfits. I think it is more then fair that I laugh, and rever to them as sexy. You two, don't sell yourself as sex symbols in the rave scene. Thus, I don't think of you that way. Quote:
Maybe in your cookie cutter, Riverside is good, but the plazza is bad world, dj's are seen like this. But in the rave scene, dj's aren't uber gods. Basically your making excuses, your never going to be good unless you suck it in, and realize, that nobody cares weather it's a girl or a guy, they're two fucking high. Or, you could sell yourself as a sexy symbol. or not. |

more excuses?
Miss Inocent is consider by myself to be one of the most skilled dj's around. Does it matter that she's a girl? No. She plays good music. Untill you understand that, djing is probably the one musical classifications where sex don't matter, your doomed to make dumb ass coments that make me laugh. |

How so, I'm just repeating myself... But thanks for comming out Marty, I would defenetly give you a booking if you did that! Wait.... I just realized you said sex dosen't matter, but this whole arguement has been my pissed off with you for saying that is harder to be a female dj... |
|

Sure maybe being female gets you some gigs....but that's not what makes you last! And it's hard to make a good impression as a dj when you are a girl...because sometimes all ppl look at you as is a girl, or sex object, or whatever. I'm not accusing any of you guys that that's how you view female dj's...but I AM saying many guy dj's I know DO view females that way.
|
|

No, being female does not get you gigs
Not sucking at a horribley easy task of djing gets you gigs being female does not mean you won't last, look at my example of miss inocent. And the reason we few a lot of female dj's this way is cause those dj's that we few that way, have marketed themselves as such. |

I'm not a dj but when I get the appropiate funds (ie. job) I'm going to get some CDJ decks... then I'll start "spinning" goa, psy, and "uplifting" trance...
I figure CDJ decks would be better because then I can make CDs with the specific tracks I wanna play (using the computer)... People that are inspiring me to look into DJing are Goa Gil, Wizzy Noise, Deedrah, Astral Projection, Green Nuns of the Revolution, etc. I think that most of these people just produce rather than DJ... but thats the stuff I would play at a party if I was "spinning"... NinjaBoy
Look, I'm not whining...I'm just sick of your asshole way to tear me apart on the boards. I am not saying that YOU are sexist, but there are a lot of guys out there, and many are dj's, promoters or just simply party go-ers who are. This was not a personal attack towards you, get it through your head. I never said any one in this thread was sexist either. However, quit saying there isn't sexism in the scene because there is. Why would I even bother to hold up this argument for so long, if there wasn't!? Sexism is pretty much everywhere...what are you ignorant!? It is present in Canada, Africa, Europe, India...the list could go on. I wasn't trying to personally put an end to sexism. However, I was trying to prove a point about sexism in the scene. WHOO HOO I'm underage, by what 8 months! Big deal! It hasn't stopped me playing in clubs already. What a pathetic attempt to slap me in the face, "underage dj" ooooh. Sorry that it bugs me when I get bad looks when going record shopping. If someone treated you like you didn't belong in there all the time, it would start to bug you too! How would you even KNOW if I was letting sexism hold me back!? First of all, still going record shopping even though I get weird looks, playing at clubs, learning how to produce my own tracks, is REALLY holding me back huh? I'm not going to let it hold me back...how many times do I have to say it? |

Chris? Take a break! Where not saying you are sexist or that all males are, however you seem to be quite un openminded?
Look, growing up with tellavition and media(before i saw the under ground look of DJ'ing) DJ's where know to be be hard core cool guys in there young 20's to mid 30's with chicks going after them. When a younger female, this is all i had to look up to! I saw that at dances and all over the media. When i was little, if i wanted to try and get my hands on trying djing, i was polite and asked... but i was constently ignored. I constently made an effert to try it, And would have to speak up loud and push my way through mean boys who thought it was funny to see a girl want to try handling electricle equipment. It was humiliating to an exstent. But it took 5 years untill i finaly got a little respect or have someone think, "hey this chick realy wants to try this? thats cool lets give her a chance" nice that I found someone finaly to give me at lest a good half hour to just try it out FINALY!!! Chris this is what i went though! Im still amazed and wonder where i got the curege to get my tables. Dont give me that excuse bullshit... I had a relay rough time tyring to try it out, and had NO INCUREGMENT OR BELIFE AT ALL FROM ANYONE!!! And yes i blame that on being a girl, Because that little electric equipment crew never realy wanted a girl to join them and made me feel like an out cast. Meny girls and myself face this shit all the time, you cant point it out or see it relay. Your self probley doesnt even care, but if you where the only girl and walked into a reccored store with 10-15 other males, dont tell me you wouldnt feel akward a little. And I still do. All the time dealing with promoters/lighting or sound crew, and DJ's... i walk in being the only female. Its tough and seems strage like I dont belong there (unless there realy cute) But ive had meny coments on my sets, and no i dont try to sell my self with sex, however meny coments form guys always seem to be some sexist coment or flurty pick up line. errggg, chris you dont know what its like to be a girl! Meny girls such as Jess and I dont just have this problem with DJ'ing... It happens in meny ohter things as well.
There are meny girls who only know how to act pritty and set this example to meny others. So girls arnt just finding it hard to deal with the guys but with girls too. Us females are still growing up with the set example that its propper to be feminen, wich in society still means staying home not doing anything to crazy . So when ever a girl does somthing besides look pretty, cook or clean it seems wrong or rebelouse. We have to explain our selfs a lot more, cus not meny girls go out and try to be somthing such as DJ'ing... now im just babbling |

in reply to welbelove's previous post:
I do not share the same view on this concept; that you feel that because of your sex and beauty you are being opressed. It is not the man who is opresssing you(if it is: that what kind of un-healthy relationships are you in!), it is most likely yourself who is supressing yourself.
me::stina::woman:: does not feel oppressed/repressed/supressed sexually and that any of my woman friends are opressed based upon them being a women. Perhaps race, but not gender. I believe that may you do whatever you put your mind to. Survival of the fittest baby. Last edited by vesperstina; Jan 04, 02 at 09:49 PM. |
