Say, you guys with the "normal" (non-DJ) mixers like a Mackie, is there any difference in sound quality compared to a low-end-ish DJ mixer?
I have a laptop with Traktor I use for DJ'in and I use the internal software mixer, controlled by a Midi knob box which provides all the functions of a 2 channel DJ mixer. But I need a mixer for occasional use with a big amplifier or self-powered speakers for level control, venue EQ, XLR outputs, mic input, and backup music input from a CD player. I figure I can either get a low-end DJ mixer, or for more flexility a little "stage mixer" like the Mackie DFX-6 http://mackie.com/products/dfx6/index.html - not sure which way to go but leaning towards the DFX or similar. ^oh man youll definatly want to go with a little stage mixer! mackie makes great stuff. and ill porbably be crucified for saying this but, behringer puts out some decent low end mixers if your tight on cash. though i have noticed the channel strips on behringer mixers to be abit noisey at high volumes when mixed out onto a good p.a.
with either mixer, youll be able to hit the 'MAGIC' pro audio standard of 0vu = +4dbm @1.23 volts. that means youll have alot more headroom when mixing out. i think if you opt for a low end dj mixer youll be locked into the consumer standard of 0vu= [email protected] volts wich wont give you optimum sound. go with a proper mixer. |

^^ Hmmm gonna think about that - the VLZ is more of a studio mixer though - that DFX6 is only $180 USA & they have several new models announced in their Tapco line but not ready yet, even less $.
Thanks for the mixer info! Last edited by tvmann; Mar 12, 05 at 09:50 PM. |

^^^Some mixers even have a "sound" to them cause they use tuble/valve technology rather then new school solid state technology to give your sounds warmth. They cost an arm and a leg though. BTW I'm sorta talking out of my ass here (I'm always by the way).

Nope, my brother's ttx's haha... only got a 4-7 and an sk-6f to my name.. still got my mind set on tt-500's, though I know it'll take me time.
Yeah the ppd01s are pretty nice.. They could have implemented some more since it's digital but hey.. The only reason I'm using the sk-6 right now is because of the focus fader. Despite the common word, it's a smooth, strong (so far) fader. I bought the mixer for 10 bucks and it had it inside so I guess that was a steal. Last edited by scue; Mar 28, 06 at 10:12 PM. |
