More than anything, this thread was supposed to be about a loss of cultural identity. I've sat back and watch Riverside Colesium become Sport Mart Place, I've seen Science World become the Telus Sphere, and it just keeps on going. Eventually, everything will be named by commercial interrests and we will only be able to speak in brand names (already, one in four children's first word is a brand name). Just like they said in Fight Club, Planet Starbucks.

any music released by a north american group is part of our north american cultural identity. even more so when they're a multi-platinum group that regularily takes part in international tours and are plastered on billboards, television, the radio, etc etc.

something that is part of popular culture does not and should not necessarily define what western/north american culture is, though.

I would not deny it is part of our culture, but to say it is a defining piece in cultural identity is really far off.

You can't just pick and choose what parts of our culture define us. No matter how small or how large a part of our popular culture something is, it still defines our identity as a culture. From legendary Neil Young to Vancouver locals Mass Grave.. hell even though hockey is our national sport, a Canadian still invented basketball. Even though we only have one team left playing professionally it's still a part of our identity.

Just because your favourite band is The Pixies, doesn't mean the fact that you like the single off of Marilyn Manson's new album defines your identity any less. It's the same with our culture.
