I didn't say that there is anything wrong with being critical. In fact, I think it's important to be, especially with these super condensed papers that often omit details. I've been more critical myself being forced to do critical discourse analysis on mass media news articles. I literally can't escape over-analyzing them these days (ie- corporate/private interests, who's ideas are being represented, etc...) What I *AM* saying though is that as long as there's readership, these news sources can't be counted on to change their content or style. No company survives without a demand for it's product. If you want reliable news sources or certain kind of content then you'll have to take the initiative to go find it yourself. they have a target market. people who dont normally read somehting unless its free. guess that target market's level of understanding or desire to understand anyhting that is going on in this world. if they were giving out free globe and mail at skytrain stations that market wouldnt read them because they werent shiny enough and had too many 'hard' words in them. |

News quality aside, it really is a HORRIBLE waste of paper. Every skytrain station is like LITTERED with soggy dailies.
edit: btw though, I'd rather stare at my shoes than read one of those things. Why do we think we need "fluff" to relax? Sing yourself a song or something. Last edited by laska; Oct 25, 07 at 12:37 AM. |

I've gone to a couple places around here and stumbled across some 3-month-old copy of the newspaper. I'm not saying this is exclusive to 24 hour, but it is a matter of volume. They stuff those in the hands of every single skytrain commuter they can during peak hours so they just end up getting chucked all over the place. Personally I never accept a copy from the people handing them out. If I'm interested in a headline when someone else is reading, I'll find one lying around and throw it in the recycle bin at my stop. Which, of course, they don't have on every platform (particularly the busy ones) so I gotta carry it until I can find one (If I've got too much crap that usually means it ends up in the garbage). Litter is litter, I don't care if you pay a fine because the city has to clean it up. Just because it's taxed doesn't mean it's good. |
