I've gone to a couple places around here and stumbled across some 3-month-old copy of the newspaper. I'm not saying this is exclusive to 24 hour, but it is a matter of volume. They stuff those in the hands of every single skytrain commuter they can during peak hours so they just end up getting chucked all over the place.

Personally I never accept a copy from the people handing them out. If I'm interested in a headline when someone else is reading, I'll find one lying around and throw it in the recycle bin at my stop. Which, of course, they don't have on every platform (particularly the busy ones) so I gotta carry it until I can find one (If I've got too much crap that usually means it ends up in the garbage).

Litter is litter, I don't care if you pay a fine because the city has to clean it up. Just because it's taxed doesn't mean it's good.
litter is litter, i totally agree. but i see the sun, the province, the g&m and other publications that i see littered around the city just as much. do i freak out and boycott them too?

the arguement that a publication is wasting another tree is the lamest there is. most printers use 100% recycled paper w/ 50% post consumer waste where they can.

as long as i am doing my part i cant get angry at seeing it. if i do, then i have to be angry at starbucks, mcdonalds, the vancouver sun, and every club in the downtown core. i personally like my lattes, big macs, veg material, and rave flyer wallpaper.

you might know this, but 24 was named for the time it takes to read it, coincidentally enough, the same length as sitcoms.

OFFICIALLY CALLING BULLSHIT.

No freaking way you see those litter anywhere near the amounts that 24 is. I'll go so far as to say if you looked at the numbers, 24 hour + metro together produce more litter and clutter than EVERY OTHER NEWSPAPER IN VANCOUVER COMBINED. No freaking way ANY other newspaper distributes as many per day and no freaking way they account for the same amount of litter as any of those other papers.

As I say, I'm not saying those other papers don't cause litter, but the pushy tactics of trying to get EVERYBODY with these papers (especially 24) in their hand just results in more garbage. Even better are the ones that leave like 10 copies all lined up on the sidewalk so that when they're not around people (and the wind) can pick them up and chuck them all over the place.

Litter in a city is unavoidable. But to equate any other newspaper to the amount that those two create is blinding yourself to what's going on in this city.

I wrote this early in the morning with a thought process that felt like it was to explode If i didn't break page. I am perfectly aware of how each individual that picks it up is reading what they may Sodoku'ing it up or so....this is a basic sickness I have to just the in general plain of what I feel like interrogates my space every day. I love that it revved some of you in some way or another.....I picked the one paper that actually has physical human elbows tossing them at me....or sweet burly eyebrowed old men, looking like they could bake me cookies, and play me a Jim Croce song..if i took it....It really just get's to me. The truth is if i had broken down what I meant it would have spanned on for centuries...im still tweaking my space...rolling with it......this is simply how i sway. To each their own....Reading the news, brushing ones teeth...has many meanings...in some ways i believe it....take from it what you may....It could be like that "I contradict myself because I contain multitudes" quote or something.
Somedays i read what I've written, and sit on an entirely different hill.
Sometimes I dont even write page...i write music. I understand people will take with it what they may.........but im just happy it spanned 3 pages of word and thought into somwhere.
In reply to Ninja Boy...i just wanted from this...some conscious thought that maybe stung a little, who knows...
And yes.. to Decypher, the TV can be used in many different ways, I use it for Documentaries sometimes myself...and hey man...it happens,
but the mass that use it, that adopt these principles of the show mentalities into their own lives...and the overall usage..that can rob people from feeling...or that has the opposite effect...that becomes the feeling...Ultimatley has me staticy eyed.
Thanks for all of your replies, and adding to the stir.

i am not going to lie. i have a car, i drive everywhere. so i dont always see the impact that paper has on the city. but when i do look, it isnt just 24 i see.

i am not denying that they are annoying, nor are they not a productive use of paper. but if we are going to jump on a soap box, and preach about how 24 is the enemy and should be brought down, then you better be doing everything you can to reduce, reuse, and recycle. maybe it is just me, but it seems like such a ridic thing to get hyped about.

and that poor schlub who makes $30 a shift, which probably lasts 4-5 hours, which isn't even minimum wage(found this on craigslist for you), doesnt care if you take the damn paper. politely say no thanks and be on your way.

Huh? For complaining about a paper based on poorly written articles, you really need to learn how to write.

Who's calling for a boycott anyways? My point is moreso: I hate this company, and this is why. Do what thou wilt.

Only soapbox I'm standing on is the one you're hoisting me onto.

Sadly its here to stay, its co-run by Vancouver billionaire Jimmy Pattison's group and he has tons of billboards around the city. Don't expect the money well to dry up anytime soon.

On a good note sometimes its the only thing to read while waiting for your food at the local greasy spoon

yea but ol jimmy is an incredible business man, and if the paper stopped generating revenue, he would be quick to can it. his quadrillions of dollars has no effect on the productivity of a shitty newspaper.

Indeed he is...

"I think they'll do fine," Pattison told reporters. "It's a different product ... (24 Hours) is looking for young people that don't have a lot of time to read."

That about sums it up & you're right hes a wizard when it comes to advertising and business

I'm going to have to agree with ebbomega on this one. 24 and metro are by far the worst trash-generating newspapers. It's likely because of the sheer volume of their distribution and the fact that their Price= $0. People are more likely to treat free products like trash.

The issue has been getting so bad that translink has had to make periodic recorded ANOUNCEMENTS on the skytrain reminding people to "please help keep our transit system clean and dispose of all garbage in the recycling bins" (this is not verbatim).

Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think they've really even had newspaper recycling bins parked at skytrain stations until the 24 hours/metro paper-distrubutors have infiltrated the skytrains.

i find it sad that it took these publications to encourage the transit authority to introduce any type of paper recycling system. since the beginning of the skytrain, people have read on the train, only to have to throw out their papers in the garbage. people are sheep, if there were 3 recepticles for garbage bins(one for bottles, one for paper and one for garbage) people would use them properly.

the skytrains had litter on them long before 24, it was generally just grosser.

Before 24 and metro, there weren't transit cleanup crews constantly having to pick up newspapers off the grounds and chairs at the end of the line. I skytrain to VCC-clark to catch the 84-UBC so I see what the train looks like at the last stop. True, transit crews have and will always have to pick up some degree of garbage, but a large portion of the litter nowadays is just 24.

I find myself frequently having to move aside a 24 before I can take a bare seat. People line wet benches at busstops with 24, so their asses don't get wet.

They're everywhere! They even distribute these things at UBC... like we already don't have tons of mindless readings to do.

It's still just as gross though. And we didn't have these godawful "Please pick up your litter" announcements every five minutes on the trains (well, ok, they've made them less frequent now, but they still do them).

I find it sadder that they had to institute all these new cleanup policies so that people could slack more at obtaining the news. It's a bit of a chicken-egg argument, yes people littered before, but Skytrain had cleanup crews before. It's just now they have to station them at every single terminal throughout the entire day because so much more litter is occurring.

I still find overturned coffee cups, some kid's ice cream cone, all the same wonderful clutter we had before (perhaps more with our growing population), it's just that now it's sopping in 5 daily newspapers as well.

That doesn't wash, because Straight and Westender and NY Times crossword serve this purpose for me as well.

Media doesn't have to be mindless to occupy your mind! In fact it seems counterintuitive that it should be!

I stick with my previous analysis of the target market, but I'll replace "free" because of course so are GS and WE.
