Toddler slain in North Delta
Infant found dead in North Delta
DELTA, B.C. - A baby girl is dead and her father arrested on suspicion of murder. Police were alerted to the toddler's death minutes before 9 a.m. this morning after receiving a 911 call directing them to a home at 7888 116 Street. Const. Paul Eisenzimmer said the infant - whom he described as a "toddler" - was dead by the time officers arrived. An adult male in the home was taken into custody. Eisenzimmer described the suspect as an Indo-Canadian man in his 40s, adding "there is believed to be a family connection." He refused to elaborate further pending the investigation. Neighbours, however, identified the suspect as Lakhwinder Singh Kahlon and the dead infant as his daughter Rajwinder (Ravi) Kahlon. Surinder Johal, who had lived in a basement suite in the home where the death occurred, said she spoke with Kahlon's wife, Manjit, by telephone shortly after the child's death. She said the child was about 18 months old, the youngest of three daughters in the family. Neighbours said the older girls are about nine- and 12-years-old and are students at nearby McCloskey Elementary. Johal and other neighbours said Kahlon had worked in the construction trade, but had not been working recently. He was known as a clean living man, who did not drink nor smoke. By 11 a.m., word of the death had spread throughout the residential neighbourhood, drawing small groups of men and women out to the scene. Police tape stretched across 116 Street at both ends of the 7800-block preventing anyone who wasn't in a police uniform from getting anywhere near the house, a neat, white split-level structure with a fenced back yard. Neighbours were shocked by the death. "It's scary, scary scary," said Ashley Leslie, adding she didn't know the family. "It's freaky that it even happens this close to home," said Jennifer Lick. "It's disgusting," she said when she learned the victim was a baby. Police called the incident "a tragedy," but added public safety is not at risk. "This is an isolated incident. A young child is dead and a family has been torn apart," Eisenzimmer said in a news release. "The Delta police department shares the grief of those who have suffered this loss. We are resolved to investigate this incident to determine the truth of the matter and proceed with whatever charges are appropriate." Last edited by meth0dical; Jan 18, 08 at 07:34 PM. |
