like I already said, it IS life here. He has a life sentence which means he will be in prison until he dies, but he has a chance to apply for parole in 25 years as it is supposedly possible that anyone can be rehabilitated (the law is there 'in case') but he will most likely be denied anyways.
The difference is that in the states, they decide at the time of trial, that some cases warrant no possibility for parole. ever. It's actually only in the US that people receive consecutive life sentences and that just means no possibility for parole, as they usually add up to far more than a 100 years and so well past the persons lifetime

Here in Canada, he received ONE life sentence here for all charges."life in prison with no chance at parole for at least 25 years"

oh yeah, and here are the reasons why in the US you get consecutive life sentences (other than just not getting parole)

First, in a case with multiple victims, each family might find solace in knowing the criminal received a specific punishment for each crime. Second, the prosecutor might want multiple sentences on the books in case some were overturned on appeal. Third, the court could use back-to-back sentences to emphasize the crime's severity to the governor or the board of pardons.

"25 to life" usually refers to a lower-bound and upper-bound possible sentencing. Meaning, they can be handed a 25-year sentence, which means after 25 years they get out. No parole or anything, they've served their time, and now they get to reintegrate with society. "Life without chance of parole for 25" is a different thing.

ok, so maybe it's just that i don't understand why they would even give someone like him the right to apply for parole.

the reasons behind the consecutive sentences really makes sense though.

because the idea behind prison (in Canada) is rehabilitation not just imprisonment I guess. lofty ideals but I think it's a good thing
