Debit card swiper scam

okay so I went shopping at metrotown on saturday and fell victim to that whole debit card snatchin info scam at urban planet. Whoever pulled this stunt tried to take like $480 out of my account, thank fukin God they didnt succeed and my bank froze my account. Never thought something like that would ever happen to me. This happen to anyone else?

happened when i was 17 and broke as fuck, didn't even have 10 in my account, i only know this because i had tried to withdraw 10 for some smokes before and failed (back when they still would give 10 from the machines)
they succeeded in frauding the bank through my account by putting an empty envelope in the machine as a deposit of 1000. they then tried to withdraw it all but got stopped due to my maximum daily allowance.
i didn't find out until my new job tried to direct deposit my first check and found my account frozen.

How do you know you've been scammed? Can this happen un-noticed? Or does the bank usually find out and let you know?

Ive never had an account drained *knock on wood* but wonder if a few bills have ever been taken out with our notice?

the bad guys mange to clone your card and record you pin. Sometimes it's by swiping your card through their own reader (this is why you should always watch where they swipe the card) or, as happened to me, they have been known to setup quasi-legit, functioning, 3rd party ATM machines that have the card-reading tech installed.

There have also been cases of altering legit bank machines to record the data like this case.

There should be a way to change your pin at will... I know BMO does this but I don't think royal bank does (my bank).

Use credit card for purchases, rack up reward points; then use debit card to repay debt and balance your credit. It's also great for racking up your credit score.

^ Its not bad if youre using credit INSTEAD of debit then pay it off right away. I do this too. Builds good credit if the CC Company sees you making large payments at a time.

credit cards are not hard to fraud. While I do agree that the whole debit scam is more common now, credit cards are pretty simple to scam.

srsly.

am i the only one who knows how easy it is to fake a signature?
a lot easier than finding out someones PIN number.
even easier when half the CC's out there haven't even been signed on the back, and most cashiers don't check ID.

think about this.

also, credit cards can be used online, debit cards can't.

and.
most important.
cash comes and goes, credit is forever.
if you can't prove that the credit used was fraud you could be really fucked.

Agreed. In a single day I have access to over 1500 credit card numbers, and I'm just one retailer. Every store you shop at, every restaurant you eat at, every online purchase you make, etc. has your full credit card number and expiry. Credit card fraud is muuuuuuch easier than debit card fraud.

I'm so paranoid about debit card fraud that I no longer use my debit card except at my bank's ATM machines. I pay cash for everything now, and I pay all my bills online.

I have had this happen. It sucks! They got $400 :/ (but that was reimbursed)

It is getting so sophisticated that it is happening at reputable stores, not just shady atms.

credit cards are FAR easier to catch and have more indepth insurance coverage.

anything that looks suspicious on your end of the month statement you just call....and they fix. CAUSE ITS THERE MONEY.

not your actual 'real' money sittin in a personal account....

your credit card gets hacked and rack...mastercard sweats, your debit card gets hacked and whacked.....your the one sweatn till its fixed.

seriously....i even swipe my mastercard for coffe at tim hortons.

Some Restaurants will leave a portable Pin machine at your table for ease of use.
Eekk, not very secure.

I find myself wondering "is that there machine or
someone elses??"

And for most every day types of things- "use cash you sissies!"

A neat trick you can do if your worried about someone finding your credit card and just using it by faking your sig is to write "SEE ID" where the signature is.

Although they only ask for your id about half the time...
