While it is made of organic cotton and Bamboo fabric the fact that the shirt was half of my monthly food budget made me think that it may not be a sustainable option.


But this is the on going trend within “sustainable” culture. The whole system is being designed on the facet that the general public loves to jump on trends, and as such sustainable options can, and will, charge what ever they want and the trendy will pay. This puts those who have interest in general global efficiency in a difficult situation, they can either pay the outrageously inflated prices to be “sustainable,” and believe me, the quotation marks are there deliberately, or they must chose to be unsustainable to achieve true sustainability by using their capital in manners which in the end are more sustainable.


There is no difference in buying in organic clothing than there is in being trendy (besides the goodness of knowing you're working on that carbon footprint)

Yes, it does, as a part of a complete breakfast. If you only buy organic clothing and nothing else, not so much. If you eat organic (vegetarian preferably), buy organic, drive a hydrid, and recycle while generally trying to consume less, that's the very definition of being environmentally and socially responsible.

"Hippie" is basically a generic term for "young harmless broke person" these days. Punk a generic term for "young rowdy broke person". Ravers: "young annoying broke person". Hipster: "young pretentious broke person". Goths: "Young jaded broke person". Rockers: "Young broke person with a guitar".

Sure there are some that aren't young, but they are nowhere near a significant portion of the scenes.

yeh well then you have to look at other critical restrictions in society to answer that question of why people don't revolt against inequality when they have access to the paper etc. There's economic reductionism, cultural hegemony, political economic reasons, etc.

I think that's part of what the article is getting at. There are a million reasons why the revolution will never come, but the average hipster could care less about even finding out why. They are complacent. As such, they are not a true counter-culture, but an underground mainstream, and they absorb new movements before they even get off the ground under the banner of trendiness. Over a decade of musical events and you know what I've learned? Despite all the people claiming that things weren't the same as they were before, they pretty much are exactly the same as they were before.

PLUR was a codeword used by ravers in the mid-90s, and then it became trendy and wasn't really a codeword anymore so much as just a slogan. And that all happened before you started partying, kid (I know because it all happened before _I_ started partying). Eventually the ravers who originally used the word got all jaded at the ignorant masses spouting it like they knew what they were talking about, so eventually "PLUR" got replaced with "FUCK PLUR". Then "FUCK PLUR" became trendy and so the word just got dropped altogether.

Language memes are no different from clothing memes. A good hipster version of PLUR is wearing a wristband.

I'm just gonna go a bit longer on this one. You missed the point of that episode completely. It's not that they _wanted_ to do something. What they wanted to do was listen to Reggae music and smoke weed.
